Notebook Computers and Support

As a part of its ongoing efforts to keep pace with industry, the McCombs School of Business runs an advanced computer network that mirrors, and even exceeds, what students will find in the business world. Students in the School of Business receive the following:

  • A user account for the McCombs School of Business network

  • A McCombs School of Business email address with Lifetime Email Forwarding

  • Use of the McCombs School of Business computer and media labs

  • Network storage space

Mobile Computing at the Business School

Additionally, the McCombs School of Business runs an advanced laptop program. The goal of this program is to provide students with an affordable portable computer that will meet the performance needs of their programs and be backed with comprehensive hardware and software support from the college IT staff. Incoming students may purchase notebook computers specifically configured for the Business School (running the latest, corporate-standard operating system, Microsoft Windows, and a wealth of collaborative tools) to best accommodate their technology needs. The purchase of these systems, and the required software, is managed by the McCombs School of Business. MPA students are not required to purchase a notebook computer.

The notebook program provides you with many advantages:

  • Always Available – The notebook computer purchased through this program is optimized to connect to the school's network. It can be used in many of the classrooms, the Reliant Reading Room, the Atrium, and at a variety of wireless service locations throughout the UT campus.  Such mobility within the school allows students to use their notebook computers while in class, while studying, and while collaborating with other students.

  • Software – All notebook program participants have the same software and hardware image so sharing files is seamless. Software compatibility issues are minimized and collaboration is more assured.

  • In-House Computer Support – You will have access to the SWAT Shop, a notebook computer support center conveniently located at the business school.  Dell-certified technicians provide hardware and software support on-site and supply you with temporary replacements while your system is being serviced.

  • Got Questions? – Send an email to: Notebooks@mccombs.utexas.edu

"What if I choose not to participate in the notebook computer program?"

  • You are responsible for purchasing and maintaining any hardware or software you require. Computer hardware and software is available at a discount from the campus computer store.

  • You will receive no technical support from the SWAT shop. – The McCombs School of Business cannot support any previously owned notebooks or substitute models.
