International Accounting Programs

The globalization of American business demands that future accounting professionals acquire an intimate knowledge of international business practices and a broad understanding of foreign cultures. Toward assisting students in achieving these goals, the Master in Professional Accounting (MPA) Program Office at The University of Texas at Austin has instituted three international accounting programs designed for the accountant of the future. 

 

European Double Degree Program

This program, administered jointly by The University of Texas at Austin (UT) and ESCP-EAP European School of Management, Paris (ESCP-EAP), is designed to educate UT students in European business practices, and ESCP-EAP students in U.S. accounting standards. Under the Double Degree Program, top UT MPA students may pursue graduate studies in Paris toward obtaining a Master in Management from ESCP-EAP. Conversely, a select group of ESCP-EAP students may pursue graduate studies in Austin toward obtaining an MPA degree from UT. A high level of proficiency in French is required of MPA students participating in this program.

Latin American Joint Academic Program

This program, administered jointly by UT and the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (ITESM), prepares a select group of ITESM students for professional accounting certification in Texas, and acquaints top UT students with Latin American business practices. Under the Joint Academic Program, ITESM students may pursue graduate studies at UT toward obtaining an MPA degree, and MPA students may pursue graduate studies at ITESM, plus an optional viaje academico, toward obtaining either a Certificate in the Business Environment of Latin America (BELA) or a Master in International Business (MIB). The viaje academico consists of field trips to major Latin American corporations.  BELA courses at ITESM are taught in English; MIB courses, primarily in Spanish.

Timeframe: BELA: 8 months; MIB: 12 months

Prerequisites: completion of core accounting courses and at least 3 years of undergraduate business education

International Accounting Program in Paris

This program, jointly instituted by the MPA Program Office and the UT Center for International Business Education and Research, consists of a five-week study abroad in Paris during which UT students take two graduate business courses that satisfy their MPA degree requirements. One of these courses, taught by UT faculty, focuses on international accounting policy and principles. The other, taught by ESCP-EAP faculty, emphasizes reconciling financial statements prepared in accordance with European accounting standards with U.S. GAAP. This program features field trips to European corporations, and special presentations by European and international accounting experts. Classes are conducted in English.

International Accounting Program in Hong Kong

This program, jointly instituted by the MPA Program Office and the UT Center for International Business Education and Research, consists of a five-week study abroad in Hong Kong. Students will satisfy MPA degree requirements by taking two graduate business courses at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). One of these courses, taught by UT faculty, focuses on international accounting policy and principles. The other, taught by CUHK faculty, specifically covers accounting and business practices in China. Several company visits complement the material covered in class. The program also includes a one-week stay in mainland China. Classes are conducted in English.
