What is the Texas MPA?

Over the years, the MPA curriculum at the University of Texas at Austin has carefully evolved under the guidance of a renowned, student-friendly faculty to meet the educational needs of outstanding students desiring distinguished accounting careers in public accounting, industry, not-for-profit organizations, consulting and academe. The faculty of the Department of Accounting is widely respected for its dedication and commitment to its students and academic discipline. The faculty has a longstanding tradition of innovative course development, state-of-the-art research, successful textbook writing and award winning teaching.

The MPA program is sufficiently flexible to accommodate students with bachelor degrees in any field. All students are required however to meet specific prerequisites prior to entering the MPA program. An objective of the program is to allow its students to capitalize on their undergraduate liberal arts, science or business education. Pairing a diverse group of select students with a challenging, up-to-date curriculum results in graduates who are heavily recruited by today's accounting and business leaders.

The MPA program ranges in required semester credit hours from 37 to 43, depending on the student's undergraduate coursework. Students with an undergraduate accounting degree often complete the program in 37 hours. Students without an undergraduate degree in accounting or business normally earn the MPA degree by completing a 43-hour program. (A 37-hour program can typically be completed in one year [fall, spring, and summer semester]. A 43-hour program is typically completed in one year and a half [summer, fall, spring, and summer].)

MPA students may specialize in financial reporting and assurance, managerial accounting and control, and taxation. Students may also design their own areas of specialization to meet their specific academic and career goals.

We believe that you will benefit greatly from our program. We encourage you to read through this website and consider the Texas MPA opportunity.
