Undergrad Climbs into Business for Himself

Somehow, between classes and the usual recreating that undergraduates do, Leo Welder, a business finance and Plan II major from Corpus Christi, is turning his love of rock climbing into a viable business enterprise. Leveraging what he's learning in the classroom, Welder hopes that by the time he graduates in 2001, Rock 'a' Fellas will be well on its way to solvency.

He founded the outdoor adventure company last spring and runs rock climbing trips over the summer and on the weekends during the school year. First targeted to students, Welder decided to focus on selling his service to companies. "I think we're tapping into a trend," he says. "Ropes courses, rock climbing, and other team building programs are big right now. Companies want to build tight working units and increase longevity; they want their people to feel like they can count on one another."

While he's got some competition, Welder feels there's a lot more room in the market, especially in Austin. There are so many high tech companies, the labor market is really tight, and the existing rock climbing guide services are not well advertised, says Welder. "Over the next year and a half I'll be talking to companies and trying to establish some regular customers," he plans. "I'll build up my guide base and gain a solid understanding of the basics of this business."

Welder, who first started rock climbing in the 7th grade, believes that a strong customer focus will distinguish him from his competitors. He promises low client-to-guide ratios, mouth-watering on-site barbeques, beautiful locations, and above all, safety. "It's an inherently high risk sport, but the way I run the trips, no one's going to get hurt." He adds, "As far as I know, I'm the only such company in town that's insured." In addition, all of his guides complete an advanced first aid course. "Our ultimate goal is to provide new and exciting experiences with as little danger as possible."
