The Business Honors Program Celebrates its 40th Anniversary

A luncheon at the University of Texas Club last October was the setting of an extraordinary convergence of the origins and most recent developments of the Business Honors Program (BHP). Two retired professors who helped create the BHP, Edward Cundiff and David Townsend, met there with members of the recently created BHP Advisory Committee consisting of fifteen graduates and friends who are working actively to help shape the BHP's strategic focus.

Students were recruited during the spring of 1960, and classes began the fall of 1960. The inaugural class graduated in May of 1964.

From the start, the objective of the BHP was to attract the best and brightest students who might otherwise leave Texas to study business. Today the program remains true to its objective, and its foremost undergraduate business competitor is Wharton. Students admitted to the BHP have academic training and leadership skills qualifying them for admission to any college or university in the country. A few weeks ago admission letters were sent out to a group of high school seniors who average in the top 2.5 percent of their graduating classes and have an SAT over 1420.

The BHP celebrates its 40th anniversary with a reunion next October 27 and 28 (Parents Weekend and the Baylor game). All BHP alumni are invited to join in panel discussions by alumni and faculty, tours of the facilities, and social activities.

For additional information on the reunion, please follow the BHP web page at http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/programs/mbhp/ or e-mail Eli Cox, the current program director, at epiii@ccwf.cc.utexas.edu.
