International Faculty Exchange
By Pam Losefsky
The Internationalization of America’s business education curriculum happens in two ways: when American students and faculty travel, study, and work abroad and when faculty and students from other countries come here to do the same. This semester the McCombs School is fortunate to have four visiting professors from around the globe teaching courses to both undergraduates and graduate students. Five more are visiting scholars who have come to UT to conduct research rather than teach.

My first contact with UT was thanks to CIBER and its TILAR (Texas Institute for Latin American Research) program in 1996. At the time I had just returned to academia from the private sector (as the research manager of a Chilean pension fund) and it felt good to get a refresher course. I have kept in touch with professors from UT, particularly Laura Starks and Ross Jennings. I hope to both benefit from the high-end research environment at UT and take advantage of the experience of living in Austin with my family.

My research interests are in the area of market microstructure and corporate valuation issues. This visit is providing me with an excellent opportunity to interact with the Finance faculty at UT, who are truly world-class. Prior to this, I have taught at Boston College and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

I came to UT-Austin in order to experience accounting teaching and research in North America at first hand. Accounting at UT has an enviable reputation. I have learned to more effectively stimulate class participation and to incorporate more cases in my teaching. I am also changing my research agenda from environmental accounting to management accounting and started using new experimental methods.
