Women by the Numbers

Corporate Officers
There are 2 female CEOs in the Fortune 500 and a total of 6 in the Fortune 1000:

  • Carly Fiorina, Hewlett-Packard(#13)
  • Andrea Jung, Avon Products (#312)
  • Marion O. Sandler, Golden West Financial Corporation (#507)
  • Crandall C. Bowles, Springs Industries (#626)

  • 11.2% of corporate officers in Fortune 500 companies are women (1,230 of 11,017 total).
  • 83 women hold the highest-ranking corporate officership positions—3.8% of the 2,267 individuals with titles of chairman, vice chair man, CEO, president, COO, SEVP, and EVP.
  • Women fill only 6.2% of the total line positions held by corporate officers. Line positions are those with revenue-generating or profit-and-loss responsibility.

Top Earners
Of the 2,320 most highly compensated officers in the Fortune 500, 63 are women (2.7%). This percentage has more than doubled since 1995.

Board Seats

  • Women hold 11.1% of board seats (671 of 6,064), and of those, 58 are women of color.
  • Women represent 1.1% of inside directors (13 out of 1,173).

Corporate Boards

  • The number of Fortune 500 boards with women directors has increased 24 percent since 1993.
  • The number of board seats held by women is up by 23 percent since 1994, and the number of women serving on the boards of Fortune 500 companies has grown 34 percent since 1994. 
  • The greatest increase in women directors has occurred in companies with three or more women directors: since 1994, that number has increased by 79 percent, from 19 to 34.
