A Star is Born

With media appearances from coast to coast, McCombs accounting professor Michael Granof has had a highly visible year. Granof’s run began in January with a New York Times op-ed taking Congress to task for its role in the Enron-Andersen debacle. Since then, he has appeared in interviews on CNN, CNBC, and NPR, and in newspapers from Paris, France to Paris, Texas, advocating reforms in accounting policy and aggressive steps to restore investor confidence.

Granof’s opinions, including three more op-eds published since January, have been a welcome addition to the national dialogue at a time when scandals have dominated the headlines. From the pages of the Washington Post, Houston Chronicle, and Los Angeles Times, he has added perspective to the current crises while advocating, generally, for ways to put the “public” back in C.P.A.

Even with all the national media attention, it was a local paper that let the New York native know he’d made the big time. For friends and family back home, Granof’s appearance in The New York Daily News on August 13 was the true distinction. “I’ve finally made the tabloids,” said Granof. “How many academics can claim that?”
