Fellowship Honors Student Struck by Cancer

Gregory Prewoznik, a member of the MBA class of 2004, was prepared to graduate with his class, but though he was in the hearts and minds of his classmates, Greg was not present. After a long and courageous battle, cancer claimed him on May 12, only days before his graduation ceremony.

Greg grew up in the Napa region of California. A gifted athlete and talented student in high school, he attended UC-Davis, where he studied economics. At McCombs, he was active in student organizations, joining the Information Management Association and co-founding the MBA Golf Association. Despite balancing his course load with grueling cancer treatments, he managed to maintain a B+ average.

“While I only had the opportunity to know Greg for a couple of years, he quickly became the most influential individual outside of my immediate family,” said Garry Marshall, Greg’s classmate, roommate and best friend. “Greg taught me the importance of prioritizing life’s challenges.” Sandy Leeds, member of the finance faculty, said, “I knew Greg as an excellent student who showed great determination. One of the things I remember most about him (aside from his calmness and perspective) was his humility.”

Classmates publicly celebrated Greg’s life at the May graduation ceremony. Moved by the example of his life, his family and fellow students created a lasting tribute to Greg and his spirit with The Greg Prewoznik Memorial Fund. On reaching a $50,000 threshold, the fund will establish a graduate fellowship in Greg’s memory. “The fellowship will keep Greg’s memory, energy and love of life alive through other bright, deserving students,” said his mother, Donna.
