BBAs

Roy Herberger, BBA ’66, was recently elected to Apollo Group’s board of directors. He currently serves as president emeritus of Thunderbird School of Global Management. He served as the school’s president from 1989 until 2004. From 1982 until 1989, he served as dean of the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University. He is currently on the board of Pinnacle West Capital Corp., Eco2 Recycling Products, MedAire and the Mayo Clinic.

Bernard Joe “B.J.” Hughes, BBA ’76, has owned his own business, The Right Recruiter, since 1994. His company recruits individuals for executive placement.

Douglas L. Jones, BBA ’76, was recently appointed chairman of the Colorado State University System Board of Governors. Jones is the president and owner of The JONES Realty Group in Denver, Colo. and has been a leader in the growth of the Colorado real estate industry for nearly three decades. Previously, he worked in banking and served on the Washington, D.C. staff of the late Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, D-Texas.

Scott Camp, BBA ’80, was recently promoted to partner at HughesWattersAskanase LLP and has more than 20 years of experience in civil litigation and business representation. He has represented plaintiffs and defendants in state and federal courts with an emphasis on complex commercial disputes, business torts, executive/management representation and employer-employee relations. His practice focuses on complex corporate and governmental legal issues. Previously, Camp was a shareholder with Cotton, Bledsoe, Tighe & Dawson, P.C., in Houston.

Ilean Galloway, BBA ’80, joined Eisai Inc. as director of Organization Development. Previously, she was the manager of organization development for Intel Corp.’s worldwide manufacturing division. Prior to that, Galloway was manager of Dell’s Employee Involvement Program. She began her career in the high-tech industry at IBM, leaving the company as program manager of supplier quality. Galloway served two terms as co-chair of the Council for the Society of Organizational Learning and was featured as a master practitioner in Peter Senge’s second edition of “The Fifth Discipline: The Art & Practice of the Learning Organi- zation.” She is currently a doctoral candidate in human resource development at George Washington University.

Jacqueline Gilbert, BBA ’83, was promoted in 2006 to the rank of professor at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn., where she serves on the faculty in the Department of Management and Marketing. That same year, she was awarded the State Farm Distinguished Professorship. Gilbert received her MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Houston.

Cliff Haigler, BBA ’83, has been appointed CFO of Trans-India Acquisition Corp., a recently formed blank check company organized to acquire one or more target businesses with operations primarily in India, with a focus on the life sciences sector of the Indian economy. Haigler is a chartered financial analyst and president of Haigler Investments, a consulting services firm to various corporations in a range of industries since 1995. He has served in various executive financial roles, including as CFO of public and private companies, and he has extensive operating and advisory experience in mergers and acquisitions.

Stephen L. Phillips, BBA ’83, has joined the Austin law firm of Giordani, Schurig, Beckett & Tackett, LLP as a partner. Prior to that, Phillips was a partner at Cantey Hanger, LLP. His practice includes the planning, structuring, re-structuring and implementation of for-profit and nonprofit organizations and their recurring operations, as well as their nonrecurring transactions, such as joint ventures, private equity funds, and mergers and acquisitions. Phillips’ practice also includes individual estate and income tax planning, business planning, and business succession and asset protection planning. Phillips is board certified in tax law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and was named Best Austin Tax Lawyer by the Austin Business Journal in 2005.

Cliff Mountain, BBA ’84, was recently appointed presiding officer of the Department of Information Resources Board of Directors by Texas Gov. Rick Perry. The department is charged with improving technology decisions and ensuring appropriate use of information resources. Mountain is the founding and managing member of Accent Capital, a venture capital firm. He previously worked as general manager and vice president of large corporate accounts at Dell, Inc. He also worked in sales and marketing with various high-tech companies, including Intelogic Trace and NBI. Mountain is a board member of Trinity Episcopal School and Unwired Buyer.

Brian Rawson, BBA ’84, was selected as the chief technology officer for the State of Texas and executive director of the Department of Information Resources. He has 23 years of progressive experience in a variety of information technology management, executive level management and leadership positions, most notably with the State of Texas and a global information technology consulting firm.

Vivek Mehta, BBA ’86, is a regional manager for CMC Motors Group. In 2006, he was awarded the company’s Chairman’s Trophy. He lives in Mombasa, Kenya with his wife, Rekha; 6-year-old son, Shukan; and 1-year-old daughter, Kreeshna. Mehta said he credits his career success to the thoroughness of his UT training and is seeing the benefits 20 years later.

Mark Plaue, BBA ’86, recently became a fully licensed Texas real estate broker and also completed certification as a certified residential specialist—the highest certification in the residential real estate industry. Over the past few years, Plaue has been a multimillion-dollar producer, serving residential and commercial clients. He continues to live in Arlington, Texas, with his wife, Cindy; and children, Katie, 10, and Christian, 8.

Fredric Sherman, BBA ’86, is CFO and COO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, the nation’s largest LGBT political action committee.

Jaime Ricardo Sosa, BBA ’92, recently completed the Executive MBA program at Duke University, where he was distinguished as a Fuqua Scholar. Sosa recently left his post as senior vice president at Banistmo Securities to open his own boutique investment bank, Portobelo Capital, in Panama City, Panama.

Sanem Alkan, BBA ’94, earned an MBA in 1999 from New York University’s Stern School of Business before joining Goldman Sachs’ Private Wealth Management team. She joined Whitney & Co. in Stamford, Conn. in July 2002 as vice president for new business development. Simultaneously, she formed an independent consulting practice, SAM Advisory LLC, which has been instrumental in the formation and growth of two hedge fund businesses since 2005 (each managing $500 million within the first six months of their inception). Alkan was recently nominated to the Juilliard School Council, where she is spearheading an effort to introduce younger music-art enthusiasts in New York City to the Juilliard School.

Christie Grymes, BBA ’94, has been elected partner in Kelley Drye Collier Shannon’s advertising and marketing law
practice group. Grymes is vice chair of the American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law’s Consumer Protection Committee. She is a frequent speaker and has written numerous articles on advertising, including National Advertising Division challenges, telemarketing, sweepstakes and contests, and product safety. She earned her J.D. from the George Washington University Law School and joined Kelley Drye Collier Shannon in 2001.

Eitan Bernstein, BBA ’96, was named vice president of FBR Capital Markets Corp.’s energy and natural resources research group. Prior to joining FBR in May 2005, Eitan followed the U.S. independent oil and gas producers as an associate at Calyon Securities; and before that, he worked in the energy industry for more than six years. He has appeared on business television and is frequently quoted in the print media.

Angela Hahn, BBA ’97, was elected to membership of the law firm, Cozen O’Connor. Hahn concentrates her practice in subrogation and recovery, regularly handling cases involving construction defects, product liability, contract and general negligence claims. She is also an active member of the community, serving as pro bono volunteer with the Dallas Volunteer Attorney Program and mentoring three law students from Southern Methodist University.

Suzan Sultan, BBA ’99, received an MBA from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business on June 10, 2007, and joined Discover Financial Services’ marketing department on July 30, 2007. On July 1, 2007, she married Jeremy Mann; they reside in Chicago. In attendance was fellow Longhorn Laura(Cat) Koehn, BBA ’99.

Switzer Deason, BBA ’63, MBA ’64, took a reprieve from early retirement to launch Oasis Bank as president. Oasis opened in Houston in May with additional banking centers planned.

Thomas Skelly, MBA ’75, was named an independent member of Clayton Holdings’ Board of Directors. Skelly retired from Accenture in 2004 after holding several senior positions with the company. He is currently the chairman of the investment committee of the U.S Accenture Foundation.

J. Francisco Escobar, MBA ’80, has been operating a relationship management consultancy focusing on the marketing communications and advertising industry. Peter McNierney, MBA ’90, was recently named president and CEO of First Albany Companies Inc. and was also appointed to the board of directors He joined the firm in October 2002 as director of investment banking. Previously, he was head of the healthcare and communications groups at Robertson Stephens and before that was an officer in the healthcare group of Smith Barney. McNierney started his career as a securities attorney at Dewey Ballantine.

JoAnne Wallace McIntosh, MPA ’91, has joined the Austin law firm of Giordani, Schurig, Beckett & Tackett, LLP as a partner. Prior to joining the firm, McIntosh was a partner at Cantey Hanger, LLP. In her practice, she represents both U.S. and non-U.S. clients in the design of their estate planning, business, and business succession documents, as well as the administration of trusts and any entities comprising those structures. McIntosh also advises individuals and entities on federal and state tax issues. Board certified in estate planning and probate law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, McIntosh is also licensed as a certified public accountant by the State of Texas. She is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the Austin Bar Association and the Estate Planning Council of Texas.

Michael Ross, MBA ’93, was appointed the director of manufacturing operations for Innovative Neurotronics. During his 34 years in manufacturing and engineering, Ross served as vice president of engineering and operations for Roper Industries, National Instruments and Xplore/Aural Technologies.

Maurice McCord, MBA ’94, is a retail industry innovator who recently accepted the position of retail channel director with MARS Advertising. Prior to joining MARS, McCord was brand development manager with Home Depot. McCord resides in Atlanta, Ga.

Michael Jones, MBA ’95, is chief information officer of the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). He leads the NMDP’s 130-person information technology department, which develops and supports the organization’s unique business and technology needs. Jones most recently served as the chief technology officer of Express Scripts, one of the largest pharmacy benefit companies in North America. He serves on various advisory committees, including Minneapolis-based Urban Ventures, which focuses on enhancing the opportunities and the wealth creation capacities of urban communities.

Barney C. Wiley, MPA ’98, was promoted to senior vice president of lending at Trinity Bank, N.A. Wiley is a Fort Worth native and a certified public accountant. He has been with Trinity since its inception in 2003. Trinity Bank is a community-oriented independent bank with local ownership and management.

Mike Ames, MBA ’99, was appointed vice president of finance and administration for InovaWave, Inc., a leading provider of optimization and management software for virtual environments. A high-tech industry veteran with more than 20 years of experience, Ames will be responsible for implementing the infrastructure and administrative functions of the company, supporting development and execution of the corporate strategic plan and handling relationships with the financial community. Prior to joining InovaWave, Ames served as chief financial officer at Neogent (purchased by Sun Microsystems) and has held several financial leadership positions at Vignette, Tivoli, Lotus and IBM.

Adam Kemp, MPA ’99, is flying high these days. He recently joined American Safety Razor Co. as director of taxation, broadening his responsibilities to include federal, state and local and international taxation. In addition to his new position, he made his first sky dive in July.

Pascal Dorster, MBA ’02, was appointed senior director of invehicle vision sensors at Cognex, a design, manufacturing and marketing company for machine visions sensors and systems. Dorster will oversee development and marketing of Cognex vision products that are designed specifically for use inside vehicles, where they will enhance safety by providing automated assistance to drivers.

Alan Pentz, MBA ’02, joined GlobalOptions Group as director of federal programs. Before joining GlobalOptions, Pentz spent six years on Capitol Hill as a legislative assistant to U.S. Rep. Paul Kanjorski, D-Penn., and then as a speechwriter and press secretary for Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont. He also worked with SRA International as a principal in its public safety and homeland security practice.

Andrew Coleman, MBA ’04, was named vice president of FBR Capital Markets Corp.’s energy and natural resources research group. Coleman has seven years of experience in the energy sector with both BP Exploration and Unocal. His experiences covered engineering and commercial disciplines in petroleum/reservoir engineering, operations, strategic planning and business development. In addition, he has been a member of the National Association of Petroleum Investment Analysts (NAPIA) since 2004 and a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) since 1993.

PH.Ds

Joan Lamm-Tennant, Ph.D. ’83, recently became global chief economist and risk strategist for Guy Carpenter & Co., LLC, a leading global risk and reinsurance specialist. Prior to joining Guy Carpenter, Lamm-Tennant was senior vice president of General Reinsurance and the president of Gen Re Capital Consultants (GRCC), an independent consulting group that advises insurance companies on enterprise risk and capital management.

Dorothy Leidner, MBA ’88, Ph.D. ’92, is the Randall W. and Sandra Ferguson Professor of Information Systems and Director of the Center for Knowledge Management at Baylor University. Prior to rejoining the Baylor faculty, she was an associate professor at INSEAD and at Texas Christian University.
