BBAs
R. Scott Hood, BBA ’70, is
a partner and founder of Hood & Selander CPAs, a CPA firm in
Charleston, SC. Hood and his wife Nancy have two daughters
and a grandson.
Bernard Joe Hughes, BBA ’76, has enjoyed
his past 15 years as an executive recruiter. His wide range
of experience includes serving as a public accountant,
director of an HEB store, a consultant for the auto industry
and teaching high school. He has a son, Matthew, and enjoys
tennis, golf, music and attending UT sports events.
Charles Holley, BBA ’79, was promoted to executive vice
president finance and treasurer of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. in
January 2007. In this capacity, Holley will oversee finance,
tax, investor relations and treasury. Holley previously held
the title of senior vice president of finance with
responsibility for the company’s accounting and tax areas,
its financial reporting as well as investor relations.
Dan Malone, BBA ’81, accepted the position
of executive vice president and chief financial officer for
Alamo Group, Inc., a leader in the design, manufacture,
distribution and service of high-quality equipment for
maintenance and agriculture.
Mark Schiavone, BBA ’81, is devising a way
to give small businesses discounted access to the perks
enjoyed by larger businesses through his Web-based
enterprise, TheBuyingGroup. com. Schiavone’s business
negotiates special rates for goods and services, such as
office supplies and shipping, and passes the savings along
to his clients.
David Walls, BBA ’81, accepted the position
of vice president and general counsel at Crown Energy Co. in
Oklahoma City. Walls spent 18 years in private legal
practice before joining Crown Energy.
Jeffrey Herbert, BBA ’82, joined Aflac in
its newly created position of senior vice president, chief
marketing officer. Herbert, a 20-year marketing and branding
veteran, previously served in executive positions at the
Coca-Cola Co., Campbell Soup Co. and Kraft General Foods.
Edward Burbach, BBA ’83, joined Gardere
Wynne Sewell LLP where he will lead the firm’s Austin
Litigation Group. Prior to joining Gardere, Burbach was
appointed in 2003 to the post of Texas deputy attorney
general for litigation by Texas Attorney General Greg
Abbott. Mitchell Sikora, BBA ’84, announces the launch of JT
Partners, a firm dedicated to raising capital for private
equity firms, with a focus on real estate. Sikora, who
brings more than 20 years of experience in the investment
banking and real estate professions, will serve as managing
director for the firm.
Mark Dern, BBA ’85, and president of Dern
Capital Management Corp., has been appointed to TD
Ameritrade’s national advisor panel.
Gary Greenberg, BBA ’85, continues his
nine-year stint at Weingarten Realty Investors after being
promoted to senior vice president of capital markets. In his
new position, Greenberg will manage the company’s
institutional investor joint ventures.
Michael Burns, BBA ’86, is a founding
principal and managing director of Guggenheim Venture
Partners, LLC, a new venture capital business led by three
seasoned industry executives with regional and technological
expertise. The firm plans to capitalize on a growing number
of opportunities in the mid-Atlantic, Southwest and Pacific
Northwest regions within the networking/communications and
component arenas.
Steve
Vartanian, BBA ’85, and his wife, Kristen, welcomed Ethan
Andrew Vartanian into the world on March 14, 2007. He
weighed in at a lean 6 pounds, 5 ounces at 20 inches long.
On the way home from the hospital, Ethan listened to his
first songs: Elvis singing “The Yellow Rose of Texas,” “The
Eyes of Texas,” and Tanya Tucker singing “Texas When I Die.”
Steve is a Texas Ex life member and was a very active member
with Alpha Phi Omega, a national service fraternity. He
proudly ran the flag at the last two Rose Bowl victories.
Both parents are so excited and thankful for Ethan.
Jeff Kazaka, BBA ’88, and his wife
Elizabeth welcomed their daughter, Giselle Margaret, in
October 2006. Kazaka and his family live near Washington,
D.C. where Kazaka is vice president of marketing for
Bethesda, Md.–based Chevy Chase Bank.
Pia Denise Flanagan, BBA ’92, was elected
to partner in the New York office of Baker & McKenzie.
David Loev, BBA ’92, has been named a Texas
Super Lawyer by Texas Super Lawyer magazine for the second
consecutive year. Loev has a private practice providing
corporate and securities law assistance in Bellaire, Texas.
Susan Rosenberg, BBA ’92, and her husband,
Michael, joyfully announce the birth of their daughter,
Hannah Isabelle. Hannah joins her future Longhorn siblings,
Benjamin, 5, and Nicole, 6.
Will Franklin, BBA ’94, will join
SignalEnergy, Inc.’s board of directors. He previously
served on the board of directors for Slate River Resources,
Hercules Offshore and IDM Equipment.
Seth Wexler, BBA ’94, joined the
partnership of Fulbright & Jaworski’s Houston office where
he previously served as a senior associate.
Brett Hurt, BBA ’94, the founder of
Coremetrics and CEO of Bazaarvoice, joined Click Forensics’
board of advisors. In this role, he will use his expertise
in e-commerce measurement solutions to assist the company in
developing guidelines to help advertisers stop click fraud.
Adriana Hook, BBA ’96, recently completed
her certification as a career practitioner and has joined
the Ginac Group, Inc., where she will manage the development
of the newly established Certified Career Practitioner
Institute.
Heather Wilson, BBA ’96, is employed with
GE Commercial Finance in the company’s commercial equipment
finance division where she has recently taken on the role of
quality leader.
Bill Cruise, BBA ’97, accepted a job as
senior associate with Canaccord Adams at their recently
opened Houston office.
Jack Callahan, BBA ’01, worked for three
years at Honeywell International before earning an MBA from
Harvard Business School. After graduation, Callahan moved to
Chicago to work for Bank of America in its commercial bank
division. He and his wife Amanda have been married since
June 2003.
Rommel Legaspi, BBA ’03, has accepted an
analyst position with the decision and support team in the
system finance department at Christus Spohn Health System in
Corpus Christi, Texas. “When I have free time from the
office, I like to continue the great hobby I started in
Austin (at Ruta Maya Coffee House to be exact) and play open
mic nights at the Executive Surf Club,” he said.

James Thokey, BBA ’41, MBA ’47, survived
Hurricane Katrina, sold his gutted residence “as is,” and
now lives in an apartment overlooking Bayou St. John and
City Park.
James Stone, BBA ’58, MBA ’59, was named
managing director for USBX. Stone has 19 years of experience
in the finance market, including closing transactions
ranging in size from $5 million to $4 billion. Stone
previously founded Converge Capital and was a senior
executive with several other investment banks.
Roger Davidson, BBA ’70, MBA ’71, will
serve as senior vice president of merchandising and
marketing for Wild Oats Markets, Inc. Before joining the
executive team at Wild Oats, Davidson spent most of his
career at the H.E.B. Grocery Co., where he held a variety of
positions, including director of the company’s $1 billion
private label business. Andre Dubbeling, MBA ’74, will bring
his international perspective and global experience to
Tannenbaum & Aalok brokerage firm as a business broker at
the company’s New Jersey headquarters.
Michael Rescoe, MBA ’78, resigned from his
position as chief financial officer and executive vice
president at Tennessee Valley Authority to become the chief
financial officer at Travelport Limited.
Jeffrey Hinson, BBA ’77, MBA ’79, was
elected to the TiVo Board of Directors where he will serve
on the audit committee. An independent consultant, Hinson
previously served as executive vice president and chief
financial officer for Univision Communications and Univision
Radio.
David Siekmann, MBA ’82, is a program
manager for the Honeywell Navigation Package being developed
for the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The 787 will be the
world’s first all-composite airliner.
Gregory
Brown, MBA ’85, was recently named vice president
of Choice Privileges, the global guest loyalty program for
Choice Hotels.
Jonathan Gray, MBA ’87, joined Comerica
Bank in Boston as its senior vice president in the venture
funds services group, where he manages the bank’s
relationships with private equity firms located east of the
Mississippi.
Keith Jezek, MBA ’88, was named president
and CEO of vAuto, an inventory management solutions provider
for the retail automotive industry. Jezek has 15 years of
experience with high-tech firms, including leadership
positions with Digital Motorworks, LP, TraveLogiX and
Tallard BV.
Doug Quinn, MBA ’89, was named president of
Soccer United Marketing (SUM). Since joining SUM in 2004,
Quinn has spearheaded Major League Soccer’s agreement with
Adidas, secured long-term agreements with major television
networks and increased the league’s sponsorship revenue.
Rob Williams, MBA ’91, formed an
independent motion picture production company called Guest
House Films. His first film as writer and director,
“Long-Term Relationship,” played at more than 20 film
festivals. “Back Soon,” his second film, was released this
year.
James Lee, BBA ’88, MBA ’92, has been
appointed to serve in President Bush’s administration as a
member of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s National
Advisory Council. The council, which is comprised of
business leaders from 10 regions across the U.S., provides
expert advice to the Small Business Administration on how to
maintain and strengthen the nation’s economy by protecting
the interests of small businesses and private enterprise
nationally.
Bernardo Acebal, MBA ’93, was appointed
executive director of Morgan Stanley’s Private Wealth
Management team, which will serve the Latin American market.
Barry Randall, MBA ’93, is the portfolio
manager of the MTB Small Cap Growth Fund, which was recently
named the Wall Street Journal’s “Category King” for its 2006
one-year return.
Michael Breen, MBA ’94, is a founder and
CFO of Xtreme Power, a Kyle, Texas–based power systems
company with sophisticated technology to deliver efficient
solutions. Xtreme Power recently received a $2 million grant
from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund to help accelerate
commercialization of its large-scale load leveling products.
David
Peck, BBA ’95, MPA ’95, was elected to join the
partnership in Vinson & Elkins’ United States office, where
he is a member of its tax law section. Prior to joining V&E,
Peck worked as lead tax counsel for Exco Resources, Inc.
Mark DeFanti, MBA ’96, was recently
appointed assistant professor of marketing at Providence
College. Before joining the faculty at Providence, DeFanti
spent seven years in marketing and business development.
Since graduation, Jennifer P. Lake, MPA ’96
and Fritz Lake, MBA ’95, have lived in
Dallas, London (for a short time), Houston and, for the past
three-plus years, Dallas again. They are now contemplating a
move to the Hartford, Conn. area because Fritz has recently
accepted an executive position with United Technologies
Corp. They have three very brilliant and busy children,
which keep them way too busy at all times!
Joe Martinez, MBA ’96, and his wife,
Carrie, live and work in Dallas. After 10 years of marriage,
they welcomed their first child, Morgan, in November.
Martinez has been with Société Générale Corporate and
Investment Banking for nine years. He focuses on the real
estate industry, specifically, debt transactions involving
large project finance sponsors and REITs.
Nikki Baird, MBA ’98, will join Retail
Systems Alert Group as executive director of research.
Before joining the company, Baird was a principal analyst at
Forrester Research.
Stephen Taylor, MBA ’99, was appointed
president and CEO of Natural Gas Service Group, Inc. in
January 2005 and was elected chairman of the board in
January 2006.
Karissa Peden Marsh, MBA ’01, and husband
Todd Marsh, MBA ’01, welcomed their first
daughter, Whitney Rebecca Marsh, in January 2006. The Marsh
family lives in Hermosa Beach, Calif. where Karissa works at
cooking.com.
Suzanne
King Vocal, MBA ’05, and her husband moved to Des
Moines, Iowa, where she serves as a manager of business
intelligence with Principal Financial Group.
Obituaries
Edward
W. Cundiff, professor emeritus, passed away Nov. 7,
2006 in Austin at the age of 87. Cundiff served The
University of Texas at Austin and the business school with
great distinction for many years and was inducted into the
McCombs School of Business Hall of Fame in 1993–1994. He
served two terms as chair of the Department of Marketing
(1958–1964 and 1967–1971) and was chair of the Department of
Advertising in the College of Communications from 1987 to
1991. From 1973 to 1975, Cundiff was associate dean of the
Graduate School of Business, responsible for the Ph.D.
program.
Francis B. May, professor emeritus, passed
away Jan. 12 at the age of 91. May received his BBA, MBA and
Ph.D. degrees from The University of Texas at Austin, and
joined the business school as an assistant professor of
statistics in 1958. He served as chair of the Department of
General Business (now IROM) from 1964 to 1968. Though he
officially retired in 1986, May continued teaching
statistics part time until 1993.
Robert
C. Solomon, professor of philosophy in the College
of Liberal Arts and adjunct professor of management, passed
away Jan. 2 while traveling in Europe. Since 1986, Solomon
served the business school as a teaching resource for
business ethics courses. He was the Quincy Lee Centennial
Professor in Business and Philosophy and a Distinguished
Teaching Professor.
