In an Oct. 17 event featuring the Longhorn band, President Powers announced the “Campaign for Texas,” a $3 billion drive to strengthen the university’s national competitiveness and global impact. The Campaign for Texas theme is “We change people. They change the world.”

Kenneth M. Jastrow, II, BBA ’69, MBA ’71, will chair the campaign. “We have an opportunity to be a part of something special with the capital campaign,” Jastrow says. “Through our participation, we have the privilege of making The University of Texas the best public research university in the nation.”

Jastrow also served as the chair of the Commission of 125, a diverse group that convened from 2002 to 2004 to develop a 25-year vision for The University of Texas at Austin. The commission’s recommendations —which Powers said spurred the $3 billion figure—included revamping the undergraduate core curriculum, hiring visionary faculty leaders and providing them the resources and authority to meet their goals, improving graduate-student support.

The campaign co-chairs are Libba Massey, B.S. ’61 and Charles W. Tate, BBA ’68. The eight-year campaign began a two-year silent phase in 2006 and will conclude in 2014.
