Some enter business for financial gain, some to affect social change, and others for a little bit of both. Emily Bright, who most recently worked as a VISTA volunteer at a children's center, seeks hard-core business knowledge that she can take into the nonprofit world. "I gained my basic skill set in analysis and research while working at the Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C.," she says. "But when I looked at the positions in which I was really interested at non-profits, I felt that I didn't have anything to offer.
"Bent toward environmental activism, Emily still understands the business imperative. "I know that businesses will always look at the bottom line, and nothing's ever going to get accomplished if you can't reconcile environmental concerns with financial ones." With a concentration in environmental management, she will be able to help companies profitably become more conscious and comply with environmental regulations. She can eventually carry that expertise to her dream job at the World Wildlife Fund or the Nature Conservancy. Emily is supplementing her coursework with a leadership position in the Environmental Management Group, and participation in the Central Charity Challenge and NetImpact (formerly the Students for Responsible Business).
"There's a lot of talk about making more money," she allows. "But people are here for a lot of reasons. I've met a lot of people who plan to go into the non-profit world."
