McCombs Marketing Undergrads Aid U.S. Department of State

KXAN's R.J. DeSilva visted campus March 22 to profile the marketing efforts of McCombs undergraduates, who have been helping the U.S. Department of State recruit for the foreign service. With security concerns making it difficult to recruit foreign service officers, the government turned to students at The University of Texas at Austin to help develop new ways of attracting young officers. DeSilva interviewed representatives of the foreign service and McCombs students taking part in the project, including BBA Alex Nguyen, who led the team's public relations.

Plus Global Tours Draw International Attention

Moot Corp Gears Up for 2004 Global Contest

Around the globe, Moot Corp participants are gearing up to vie later this spring for the international competition's $100,000 prize—the largest guaranteed award of any student business plan contest in the world. This month, regional newspapers are tracking the potential entrants as teams from Colorado to Thailand try to make it to Austin May 5-8 for "the Superbowl of World Business-Plan Competition."

Legendary Investor Hicks Announces Plans for Retirement

In a statement released yesterday, investor Tom Hicks announced that he will resign in March 2005 from the chairmanship of Hicks, Muse, Tate & Furst, the private equity group he founded 15 years ago. “He's been a trailblazer,” George Gau, dean of the McCombs School of Business, told James Politi of the Financial Times. “This is someone with a great record in finding firms that need to be restructured, made profitable and resold for a profit.”

Dell Dropping CEO Title Just “Best Practices,” Says Prentice

In July, Michael Dell will step aside as chief executive of the Round Rock-based computer company he founded. Current Dell president and chief operating officer Kevin Rollins will succeed Dell as CEO. Business experts say this will give Dell a different perspective in terms of overseeing the company's direction. “It’s just a reorganization, trying to stay on top of best corporate practices - nothing for employees to fret about,” said Robert Prentice, Professor of Business Law at McCombs School of Business.
