The McCombs School’s Leadership Certificate Program, launched at the
outset of the 2007-08 academic year, has received a Bronze Award from
NASPA, the leading organization for student affairs administration,
policy and practice.
A class of 76 undergraduate students was accepted to the Leadership
Certificate Program (LCP) in its inaugural year.
The LCP is a unique program among undergraduate business schools. It
strives to enhance student learning and development as it relates to
self-knowledge and leadership competence. Through a variety programs and
student-directed activities, the LCP gives students an opportunity to
grow as leaders and to make meaningful connections between their
in-class and out-of-class learning experiences.
“The Leadership Certificate Program is destined to become one of the
hallmarks of the McCombs undergraduate program,” said Paula Murray,
associate dean for undergraduate programs. “Now we have a venue to allow
select students to develop their leadership skills as well as their
academic skills. This sets us apart from other top undergraduate
Bachelor of Business Administration programs.”
LCP curriculum includes a self-assessment seminar in the first year and
participation in four leadership development activities each year, which
may include taking classes, visiting organizations, going to conferences
and retreats, doing community service and writing book reviews. In
addition, students must take and pass a special capstone course in their
senior year.
Admission to the LCP is limited to a small number of students who are
chosen on a competitive basis each year. The LCP is a four-year
commitment for first-year students and a three-year commitment for
sophomores and internal and external transfer students. The LCP
selection committee considers students who demonstrate effective writing
skills, analytical abilities and a unique perspective on the concepts of
leadership.
