AUSTIN, Texas—Lillian Mills, associate professor of accounting at McCombs, has been selected for the Internal Revenue Service Advisory Council (IRSAC) for a three-year term, the agency announced Feb. 13.
The council works to evaluate public views of the IRS and uses them to improve the organization’s processes.
“With this appointment, Professor Mills continues to serve as a bridge between serious academic scholarship and tax policy formation,” said Ross Jennings, chair of the Department of Accounting at McCombs. “I am sure that she will make great contributions to this prestigious group and that this appointment will provide her with many opportunities to bring new ideas back to the classroom and to her research.”
Mills will be working on a sub-committee that deals with the Tax Gap, which the IRS defines as the difference between the amount of tax that taxpayers should pay under the tax law and the amount they actually pay on time.
“I think my academic work on how corporations report their income differently to shareholders versus the IRS will help me evaluate proposals to close the Tax Gap for corporations,” Mills said.
The council members are scheduled to meet in Washington, D.C. several times in 2007, with a public report to be provided during a meeting open to the public on Nov. 15, 2007.
