Balakrishnan Takes on New Role as Associate Dean for Research
On Sept. 1, Anant Balakrishnan, a professor of management science and information systems at The University of Texas at Austin's McCombs School of Business, will assume a new leadership role as the school’s associate dean for research.
Currently, Balakrishnan holds the Red McCombs Endowed Chair in Business. He has been at the McCombs School since 2002. Prior to that, he held academic posts at Pennsylvania State University, MIT and Purdue University. He holds a Ph.D. from MIT, and B.Tech. (Electronics) and MBA degrees from the Indian Institutes of Technology and Management, respectively.
As the dean of research, Balakrishnan will seek to enhance the school's research environment in several ways. "My primary goals are to facilitate faculty and student research, help disseminate information on McCombs research efforts and accomplishments, and help maintain a vibrant doctoral program," he says.
His own research interests encompass a variety of fields, including operations, supply chain management, telecommunications and transportation, and he has been published in leading journals such as Operations Research, Networks, Management Science, Transportation Science and Mathematical Programming. Balakrishnan also holds editorial positions in several journals in management science, operations management, and telecommunications, and served as Vice-President for Subdivisions in INFORMS, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences.
His professional research awards include a Best Paper prize from the Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences and the Transportation Science Best Dissertation Prize from the Operations Research Society of America.
“As we continue to aggressively pursue faculty development and research support initiatives, the role of associate dean for research plays a critical role in the school’s future,” said McCombs School Dean George Gau. “I consider us fortunate to have an individual of Anant’s caliber in this important leadership role.”
