Martinez Tucker, Mulva to Receive Distinguished Alumni Awards
from Texas Exes
Each year, the Texas Exes honor several alumni of The University of Texas at Austin who have distinguished themselves professionally and through service to the university with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. This year's five honorees include two alumni of the McCombs School of Business--Sara Martinez Tucker, MBA '79, and James J. Mulva, BBA '68, MBA '69.
Sara Martinez Tucker is president and chief executive officer of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, which has awarded more than 73,000 scholarships, totaling nearly $170 million. Prior to taking on that role in 1997, Martinez Tucker spent 16 years at AT&T and was the first Hispanic female to reach the company’s executive level. Among many honors earned throughout her career, Martinez Tucker was named the 2000 Hispanic of the Year by Hispanic magazine, and one of America’s top 80 elite Hispanic Women by Hispanic Business magazine in 2003.
In addition to her MBA, Martinez Tucker earned her bachelor's degree in journalism from UT Austin in 1976. As a member of the Chancellor’s Council and the Advisory Council for the College of Natural Sciences, she continues to be highly involved in the University. She is this year’s featured speaker at UT’s 122nd Commencement.
Jim Mulva is chairman and chief executive officer of ConocoPhillips. He previously served as chairman and CEO of Phillips Petroleum Company, where he began his business career in 1973. Mulva served as an officer in the U.S. Navy after earning both a BBA and an MBA at the McCombs School of Business. He was named Petroleum Executive of the Year in 2002.
He is a member of the Board of Visitors of M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and the Board of Trustees of the Boys and Girls Club of America, as well as the University of Texas Development Board and the McCombs School Advisory Council. In 1993, he played a key role in the creation of the MBA Investment Fund, which recently celebrated a decade in business.
Martinez Tucker and Mulva, will be honored at a presentation on Friday, Oct. 14 2005.
