Prospects for Oil, Inflation and Regulation Headline Texas MBA Hedge Fund Symposium

When: Thursday, April 7.

Where: InterContinental Stephen F. Austin Hotel, Austin, Texas.

Who May Attend: The event is open to MBA students, hedge fund managers and investment professionals, who can RSVP to Paul Matthews at Paul.Matthews@mba05.mccombs.utexas.edu.

Background: Inflation, the price of oil and the regulatory outlook for one of the more guarded enclaves of finance will highlight the agenda of the third annual MBA Hedge Fund Symposium, hosted by the Texas MBA Hedge Fund Organization at The University of Texas at Austin. The event provides one of the country’s few forums where hedge fund managers, investment professionals and business students can interact and exchange ideas about working in an increasingly popular area of finance. The hedge fund industry has experienced phenomenal growth over the last five years. The increase in assets under management has brought greater oversight from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and stimulated fears of an investment bubble—two of several topics under discussion at this year’s symposium.

Speakers include

  • Dr. Lacy H. Hunt, executive vice president of Hoisington Investment Management Company, discussing economic and financial factors facing the world economy. Hunt, a prominent commentator, is one of the only national analysts betting against a rise in interest rates for 2005. According to Forbes magazine, a similar call helped his company significantly outperform its peers in 2004.

  • James R. Steel, director of research at REFCO Group Ltd., LLC, talking about the geopolitics of oil. Steel, a former economist for the Economist magazine, is one of the world’s leading commentators on oil and energy commodities markets.

  • Eliot D. Raffkind, partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, discussing the SEC’s decision to require hedge fund managers to register as investment advisors. Akin Gump’s client list includes 10 of the 20 largest hedge funds as ranked by Institutional Investor (May 2004). Raffkind is one of the firm’s leading advisors to domestic and offshore hedge funds and other private investment funds.

Additional panelists and speakers will represent hedge funds and institutional investors prominent in Texas and the United States, including AVM L.P., CooperNeff, Highland Capital Management, Mellon HBV, Rogge Capital Management, Parkcentral Capital Management, Precept Capital Management, L.P, Teacher Retirement System of Texas, Tyche Global Investors Inc, Vega Asset Management USA, LLC, and Verity Capital Partners, LP.
