AUSTIN, TX. -- The September 2000 issue of Hispanic Business, ranks the McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin as the third best MBA program in the nation for Hispanics. The School rises two spots from last year’s ranking.

The magazine ranked the top 10 business and law schools nationally based on a number of criteria, including enrollment of Hispanics, percentage of full-time Hispanic faculty members, availability of student support, retention rate, and national reputation.

The McCombs School ranked highly in all of these areas. UT's rate of Hispanic graduate enrollment (15%) was the highest among the top three business schools.

The rankings are not based solely on enrollment statistics, however. In particular, the editors praised Texas for having many opportunities for students to pursue their personal and professional goals. Strong student organizations, such as the Mexican Business Networking Association and the Hispanic Graduate Business Association, were also mentioned.

The School drew praise for its Latin American ties. “Our Hispanic population includes both domestic students and international students from many Latin American countries,” Elissa Ellis, Director of Alumni Relations for the Texas MBA, told Hispanic Business. “Our partnerships with other universities all over Latin America help fuel our diverse culture,” said Ellis.

"The McCombs School of Business offers a unique opportunity for Hispanics who wish to acquire a top of the art education,” said Ximena Querol, vice-president of external affairs for the Hispanic Graduate Business Association. “McCombs not only offers an exceptional curriculum taught by outstanding professors, but also a commitment to maintain a level of diversity that is difficult to match. Hispanic students enjoy the support of the school at all levels and this is reflected both in curricular and extracurricular activities the school encourages. McCombs is definitely one of the top choices for anyone who wants to get a global, diverse and broad education.”

The University of Rochester in New York and the University of California at Berkeley ranked one and two respectively. St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas, ranked seventh, had the highest Hispanic enrollment level in the survey, at 36 percent.

The McCombs School of Business is perennially ranked one of the top business schools in the country and world according to leading business publications such as The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, and U.S. News & World Report. With strength across the board in all major business disciplines, McCombs is especially known for innovative collaborations with industry and for leading programs in technology, entrepreneurship, finance, and accounting. McCombs offers a full range of business education programs, from BBA and full-time MBA to Part-time MBA, Executive MBA, Executive Education, PhD, and graduate accounting (PPA/MPA). Under new dean George W. Gau, the school has set a goal of becoming the top public business school in the nation.
