AUSTIN, TX - Today, Cisco Systems, Inc. and the University of Texas Graduate School of Business published the first data in a new series of Internet Economy indicators, designed to monitor and broadcast information on the Internet economy.
The first results, reported widely in the national media, indicate that U.S. Internet-related businesses accounted for $301 billion in revenue last year and 1.2 million jobs to date so far -- far more than any recent studies have indicated. About one-third, or $101 billion, of this activity can be attributed directly to electronic commerce.
Cisco and UT intend to publish new indicators on a quarterly basis, presenting snapshots of the Internet's developing economic impact. A detailed explanation of the first numbers can be found at the Internet Indicators Website. The results emanate from UT's Center for Research in Electronic Commerce, under the direction of Professor Andrew Whinston, one of the country's most respected researchers in e-commerce.
Whinston and fellow UT professor Anitesh Barua conducted the research connected with the new indicators. Associate Dean Ramesh Rao of the Office of the Graduate Business Dean at UT is coordinating their joint research project with Cisco. Rao was responsible for arranging the partnership.
This major accomplishment for the Business School reflects the faculty's national leadership in e-commerce and technology and the School's dedication to collaboration with business. Visit Cisco.com or the Websites listed above to learn more about the indicators, or see the Center for Research in Electronic Commerce for more on its array of e-business activities.
