Reuben McDaniel Named Recipient of Prestigious Civitatis Award
AUSTIN, Texas — Professor Reuben R. McDaniel has been
selected to receive The University of Texas at Austin’s
prestigious 2004 Civitatis Award, which will be presented on
campus Oct. 6 during “The University at 121: An Anniversary
Observance” ceremony.
The university’s president, Dr. Larry R. Faulkner, will
recognize McDaniel and other award recipients in Rainey Hall
during the ceremony at which he also will present the
President’s Address on the State of the University.
The Civitatis Award is presented to a faculty member who has
shown exemplary campus citizenship throughout a career of
service at the university. The award’s name derives from the
Latin motto that appears on The University of Texas seal—Disciplina
Praesidium Civitatis—a terse rendering of the apothegm of
Mirabeau B. Lamar, former president of the Republic of Texas . .
. “Cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy.”
McDaniel is the Charles and Elizabeth Prothro Regents Chair in
Health Care Management in the Department of Management Science
and Information Systems. A member of the university’s faculty
since 1972, McDaniel has been an advocate for many causes
benefiting members of the university community. He has been a
leader in the recruitment of minority students and faculty and
an uncompromising advocate of women’s athletics, supporting
increased funding for women’s sports and academic achievement
among student competitors.
McDaniel also has played a key role in the introduction of
complexity science into the curriculum in the McCombs School of
Business. As chair of the university’s Faculty Council, he
worked to streamline faculty governance and to ensure excellence
in classroom instruction.
