Business Law, Ethics Professor Steve Salbu Wins National Award for Faculty Excellence

At the 45th annual convention of the Academy of Legal Studies in Business (ALSB) held in Nashville this August, the Academy presented McCombs Legal Environment of Business professor Steve Salbu with the 2003 Senior Faculty Award of Excellence. The distinction is a national award based on nominations and recommendations from academic peers around the country.

In citing Salbu, the presenters noted his combination of excellence in teaching, research, academic service and mentorship.

Professor Salbu has an established record as an innovative and highly regarded teacher, the Academy noted. He was singled out for earning the highest teaching evaluations among the 130 tenure track faculty members at the McCombs School. He has taught not only at McCombs, but also at the University of Michigan, University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, the London School of Business, and the Rotterdam School of Management. And Salbu created one of the nation's fist cyberlaw courses in a business school.

Salbu is an accomplished scholar, having written more than 40 law review articles published in journals sponsored by such prestigious institutions as Harvard, Yale, Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Michigan, and Penn.

Salbu was further cited for his service record. At the McCombs School he currently serves as Associate Dean for Graduate Programs. He also founded the business ethics program at McCombs. Additionally, Salbu has served in many important positions in his professional organization, the ALSB, including as senior editor of its flagship publication, the American Business Law Journal.

Finally, the committee stressed the mentoring that Professor Salbu has provided to junior and senior faculty in business schools across the nation. He has, for example, freely shared all of his cyberlaw course materials with professors across the country. He also organized and led sessions at national conventions to assist other professors in getting up to speed to teach this new area of the law. As one letter of recommendation noted, Professor Salbu possesses "refreshing and contagious zeal, he energizes others to join him."

Another supporter stated, Steve Salbu is "an exemplary thinker, writer, editor, organizer [and] wonderful ambassador for our profession."

In 2003 the accrediting organization for business schools, the AACSB, listed "ethical and legal responsibilities in organizations and society" as the first areas where undergraduate and graduate business students should have management-specific knowledge and skills. The McCombs School is fortunate to have a strong ethics and Legal Environment of Business group, as demonstrated by Salbu's award.

Complete text of the Academy's citation for Prof. Salbu:

"One cannot do not justice to the accomplishments of this year's recipient in the short time allotted this evening. Nevertheless, the achievements of this year's honoree may perhaps be best summarized in four separate areas.

"The first area is teaching. Professor Salbu has the highest student evaluations of teaching out of 130 faculty members [at the McCombs School of Business]. Steve is the recipient of eleven teaching awards, including induction into his institution's Academy of Distinguished Teachers in 1996 and award of an endowed professorship in 2000. This strength and success in teaching has extended beyond our recipient's campus to his many visiting professorships, including the Rotterdam School of Management, the London Business School, Indiana University, the University of Michigan and the Wharton School. Dr. Salbu is also an innovator in curriculum, developing one of the first cyberlaw courses in the United States and serving as a leader in efforts to internationalize the business curriculum.

"The second area worthy of mention is research. Once again, Steve's achievements are outstanding. This year's recipient has published forty articles in a wide variety of fields. These articles have appeared in such impressive publications as the American Business Law Journal and law journals published by many prestigious law schools such as Chicago, Columbia, Cornell, Harvard, Michigan, Penn and Yale. In addition, these articles have been [widely] cited…. What makes this record even more impressive is that the vast majority of these articles are solely authored manuscripts. Furthermore, Steve has presented papers at fifty-eight conferences throughout the United States, including every single regional academy meeting.

"The third area is service. Dr. Salbu has enviable institutional and Academy service records. At his institution, our honoree currently serves as Associate Dean for Graduate Programs, has previously served as Director of the institution's EMBA program in Mexico City and is the founder and director of his institution's business ethics program. As a member of the ALSB, Steve has served in numerous editorial roles in the American Business Law Journal culminating in the position of Editor-in-Chief in 2000. He was also one of the co-founders of the Technology Law section - a section whose panels drew more than one hundred attendees at the last two national conferences.

"However, this year's recipient simply does not serve the Academy. He leads the Academy and blazes the path forward for others. As noted by one of his colleagues, with a 'refreshing and contagious zeal, he energizes others to join him.'

"The fourth area is mentorship. … The mentoring provided by our honoree has been frequent, beneficial and heartfelt. This mentoring is too voluminous to adequately describe but has included sharing successful teaching methodologies, providing tips in undertaking and publishing research, securing grants and other financial assistance and negotiating the shoals of tenure and promotion. This role extends not only to junior faculty but also to senior faculty members, several of whom described Steve Salbu as a role model and source of inspiration.

"In summary, as noted by one of our colleagues, Professor Salbu is 'an exemplary thinker, writer, editor, organizer [and] wonderful ambassador for our profession.'

"The Academy honored these qualities by recognizing him as the outstanding junior faculty member nine years ago, and it is these qualities we again honor this evening.

"Please join me in honoring the recipient of the 2003 ALSB Senior Faculty Award of Excellence - Steve Salbu."
