Undergrads Advance in Free Enterprise Competition
COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS—Four McCombs School students
from the Students for Free Enterprise (SIFE)
organization took home first place at a case
competition held at A&M in mid-January, earning a
trophy and $2,500 prize money. The team members will
use their winnings toward the SIFE regional
competition in Dallas in April, where they will
present all of the projects their organization has
done throughout the year.
SIFE’s purpose is to teach people to help themselves
using principles of free enterprise, so the case the
teams presented dealt with ways to help a low-income
immigrant family manage their finances and save for
their children’s futures.
“It was our job to work to improve the quality of life
for the family and find cost saving measures the
family can utilize,” said Adam Bourns, a SIFE team
member and accounting student.
The other five participating teams were from The
University of Texas Pan American, Texas State
University, Oklahoma State University and Northeastern
State University. The McCombs School team attributed
its success in part to the diversity of the team.
“As an accounting major I was able to budget for the
family and create several cost savings strategies,”
Bourns said. Team members each used their specialties
to create a balanced solution and presentation.
