Faculty & Staff Engineer Devastating Defeat of Students in Softball Square-Off

In yet another installment of the eternal story of experience vs. innocence, wisdom vs. youth, McCombs faculty and staff defeated an upstart assortment of MBA and BBA all-stars 16-6 Saturday in the annual McCombs@McCombs softball tournament.

The face-off at Red and Charline McCombs Field pitted a scrappy, rag-tag team of faculty members and staff against the elite players from the combined BBA and MBA teams that had competed earlier that day. (The BBAs won the intra-student contest in a nail-biting extra innings effort.)

Faculty stars included Gerhard "Batman" Barone and surprise late addition Gaylen "Long Tall Texan" Paulson, both of whom knocked two homeruns a piece.

The homers were a significant addition to this year's contest. Last year, out of fears of student dominance, the faculty team negotiated a deal under which all fair balls hit out of the park would automatically qualify as ground-rule doubles.

Under the new, homerun-friendly regulations, the faculty-staff team took full advantage of McCombs Field's friendly confines. At times in the hit-happy contest, the faculty appeared to be driving the ball at will into the grassy knolls and parking lots surrounding the softball stadium.

Students, some of whom were routinely heard crying "Uncle" and "Mommy" during the throes of their defeat, even tried to invoke the "Slaughter Rule," calling for a cessation of play after the faculty built up a 10-run lead.

Dean George Gau would hear none of it. When asked should the game continue, he stated simply, "Bring it on."

To dispel the claims of conspiracy theorists, we reproduce here documentary evidence of the faculty win. This photo has not been doctored.
