We are the Champions: McCombs Takes Summer
Intramural Title in Dramatic Fashion
The McCombs softball team, the Debits and Credits, won the
summer intramural championship June 27. After marching through
the short regular season undefeated (outscoring opponents 33-1),
the Debits and Credits faced stiff competition in the playoff
and championship games and had to rally in their final at bat in
each game to bring home the trophy.
Against Texas Pharmacy, the D/Cs were down 7-1 after three
innings and trailed 9-4 heading into the last at bat. Coming
through with hit after clutch hit, the McCombs team tied the
game 9-9 and had the winning run on third base in the form of
Mike Guentzel. With two outs, Gary Joslin stepped to the plate
and drove a line drive to centerfield sending the Debits and
Credits into the championship.
In the championship, the McCombs team faced another team from
Pharmacy, the Pillslingers. At the end of seven regulation
innings the scored was tied 5-5 and the game headed into extra
innings. In the 8th inning, the Pillslingers scored three runs
to go up 8-5 and hearts sank among the fans that showed up to
cheer on McCombs.
However, in a demonstration of grit and determination, the D/Cs would not go quietly. Taking advantage of a few strategic hits, patience at the plate and savvy base running the D/Cs got the score to 8-7.
Facing two outs, Kristi Delaney represented the tying run on third base and on second Mike Guenztel again was the winning run. In an unbelievable repeat of the night before, Gary Joslin strode to the plate, carrying the season on his bat. Could lightening strike twice? The answer came with the first pitch as Gary drove a line drive to left field scoring Kristi to tie the game.
Rounding third came Mike who slid underneath the tag and safely brought home the title. The bleachers exploded in applause and cheers, and the team bounced in hugs from one player to the next celebrating their team victory. A part of history it will deservedly become, as the team picture will permanently hang on the wall of intramural champions in Gregory Gym.
