Women at McCombs - Changing the Face of Business

February 11, 2003
Women Business Leaders Convene in Austin

Thirty-eight female leaders from an array of Fortune 500 firms gather Friday, Feb. 14 to highlight the strengths women bring to the business world. For the second year in a row, the Women in Business Leadership Conference at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business will offer MBA students the chance to interact with some of the nation’s most successful corporate businesswomen.

The daylong conference, which takes place at the University of Texas Alumni Center, may well represent one of the greatest concentrations of female executives ever assembled in the Lone Star State.

Panelists represent such firms as Dell Computer, Goldman Sachs, Deloitte & Touche, Citigroup, Frito Lay, JP Morgan, Ford, Public Strategies, Inc. and the Austin Community Development Corp.

This year’s keynote speaker will be C. Kim Goodwin, McCombs MBA ’87, managing director and chief information officer for State Street Research and Management Company, one of the country’s oldest investment management firms. Goodwin appears as a regular panelist on CNBC’s Louis Rukeyeser’s Wall Street, has been featured in the Feb. 2 edition of Time magazine’s Board of Money Managers and as an expert in USA Today’s 2003 Investment Roundtable.

Goodwin will be joined by such speakers as Lynn A. Tyson, vice president of investor relations at Dell Computers, Kim Kovach, UT Law School professor, and Anne Motsenbocker, managing director of JP Morgan Private Bank. Overall the panels include five executive officers, four founders, nine directors and four corporate vice-presidents among an array of entrepreneurs and leaders.

The conference’s goal is to cultivate the MBA women’s community and provide students access to the experience of women who have conquered personal challenges in the professional arena. Attendees will network with the corporate businesswomen and discuss issues facing women in today’s business environment.

This year’s Trailblazer award will go to Laura Kilcrease, McCombs MBA ’92, founder and managing partner of Triton Venture Partners, L.P., a Texas-based venture capital fund specializing in high technology spin-off companies.
The conference will be divided into a series of three panel discussions, each with breakout sessions:

  • “Global Crossings” will focus on globalization issues and will address the cultural, business and ethnic issues at play in a globally oriented career.
  • “Community Crossings” will deal with ethical issues in corporate America, highlighting the importance of ethical, socially responsible business practices.
  • “Personal Crossings” will deal with the struggles to meet the demands of work and personal life and how successful female leaders integrate the two.
