Dr. Zlatkovich Passes Away

Dr. Charles T Zlatkovich, known affectionately as “Dr. Z,” Professor Emeritus of Accounting, died this past weekend. The following obituary appeared in the Feb. 9 edition of the Austin American-Statesman.

Charles T. Zlatkovich Aug. 25, 1917 - Feb. 7, 2003 Charles T. Zlatkovich was born August 25, 1917, in Fort Worth, Texas, to Eva Mattern Zlatkovich and Theo Zlatkovich. He died in El Paso, Texas, on February 7, 2003. He is survived by his son, Dr. Charles P. Zlatkovich and his wife Sandy Zlatkovich of El Paso.

Other survivors include his granddaughter, Elissa Zlatkovich of Austin, Texas; and his step-grandsons, Bradley Bullard and Timothy Bullard of El Paso and their families. He was predeceased by his wife, Clara Zlatkovich. A visitation will be held at Sunset Funeral Home on Resler Drive from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 9, 2003, with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in El Paso at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2003. He will be buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Fort Worth, Texas, on Tuesday, February 11, 2003, with a graveside service at 10:00 a.m. 

He graduated as Salutatorian of his class from Laneri High School, Fort Worth, in 1934. He received his BS in Commerce degree from Texas Christian University (TCU) in 1938 and his MBA in 1939. His was the first MBA degree conferred by TCU. He later earned his doctorate in business from The University of Texas at Austin. 

Most of his career was spent teaching accounting at The University of Texas at Austin and he served as chairman of the Accounting Department on three occasions. He was quite active in the Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA), holding several posts and was the President of the TSCPA in 1981-82. 

He was also active in the American Accounting Association and was its President in 1971-72. He coanthored several accounting textbooks, the best known of which was Intermediate Accounting, which went through several editions and was adopted by hundreds of colleges and universities. 

He and his wife Clara traveled extensively during their life together, visiting all fifty states. They also went to Europe several times, toured South America, parts of the Orient, and Australia and New Zealand. 

He served as a Supply Officer in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II. In retirement from UT Austin, he was the C. Aubrey Smith Professor Emeritus and his former department has a Charles T. Zlatkovich Centennial Professorship in Accounting which was established in his honor.
