Alumni Profile: Armando García Segovia

Armando Garcia Segovia

Editor's note: please contact us to nominate other alumni for working world columns.

Current Position:
Executive Vice President of Development for Cemex Worldwide.

Prior Experience:
Mechanical Engineer, Production Engineer, Assistant Plant Manager, Cemex (1975-79); New Ventures Manager, Grupo Cydsa (1979-81); Manager of External Relations, Conek (1981-85); Director of Strategic Planning, Director of Operations, Director of Corporate Services and Affiliates, Cemex (1985-94).

Your biggest professional challenge:
Difficult to pick one. Having been with Cemex since before we started our international growth, there have been so many, from the responsibility of leading the company’s cultural change, to developing a team that has been designing the world's most efficient cement plants, to developing the third-largest cement company in the world today.

What you like about your work:
We have been successful, and there is still a lot to learn and develop. It's difficult to get bored.
How UT helped you: The MBA is a must in today's business world. It gives you the global perspective that is necessary to understand real life business implications in world markets.

Advice for doing business in Mexico:
Mexico and Monterrey especially have great potential. There are well-educated, highly capable people here. Mexico has an open economy, with a big market north -- the US. However, in Mexico, if you target the local market, you have to be aware that as a developing country there are ups and downs that can wipe you out if you are not careful.

Advice for business students:
Prepare yourself for a highly competitive global market. This means you have to speak at least three languages, be multi-cultural, and sensitive to other cultures, other points of view. Understand politics and build a network. Also, study hard -- and play hard!
