Why attend: Professor Schmandt-Besserat is an expert on the
origin of writing and counting. Her books include “How Writing Came
About,” “Before Writing” and “The History of Counting”; she has also
published with numerous articles in major scholarly and popular
journals. Her work has been widely showcased in the mainstream
media, with such featured television appearances as “Out of the
Past” (Discovery Channel); “The Nature of Things” (CBC), and “Search
for Solutions” (PBS). Winner of numerous awards, she was recognized
as Outstanding Woman in the Humanities by the American Association
of University Women in 1979. Her book, How Writing Came About, was
listed as one of the 100 books that shaped science in the 20th
century by American Scientist magazine in 1999.
