Directions
Why attend: Bill Archer is the Senior Policy Advisor to
PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. In this role, Archer provides strategic
advice to clients on a broad range of federal policy issues
affecting business, including taxation, international trade, energy,
Social Security and health care. Archer also works with
PricewaterhouseCoopers leaders to formulate strategic plans for the
firm on federal policy matters.
Bio: The Honorable Bill Archer graduated from The University of
Texas at Austin in 1949 with a BBA with Honors, and in 1951 with a
LLB with Honors. Archer has been recognized as a Distinguished
Alumnus by the University of Texas, as well as the recipient of many
other awards.
Archer served as a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from
1970 to 2001, representing the 7th Congressional District of Texas,
a seat that previously had been held by President George Bush. From
1995 to 2001, Archer served as Chairman of the Committee on Ways and
Means.
During his 30 years in the Congress, Archer fought for tax cuts and
a simpler Tax Code that promotes investment, savings and the ability
of U.S. companies to compete in global markets. As Chairman of the
Ways and Means Committee, he was hailed for his mastery of tax
policy as he crafted and fought for enactment of the landmark
Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, a $275 billion tax cut accompanying the
Balanced Budget Act of 1997; the IRS Reform and Restructuring Act of
1998; Taxpayer Bill of Rights legislation and numerous other
pro-taxpayer initiatives. He also successfully defended against
numerous tax increases on businesses and individuals that were
proposed by the Clinton Administration. He served as a Member of the
Joint Committee on Taxation from 1988 to 2001, and as Chairman for
three terms.
