Accounting

Overview

The doctoral program in accounting is ranked #1 in the country by the Public Accounting Report. It is designed to prepare students for successful careers in research and teaching at leading academic institutions. Admission to the doctoral program is competitive, and. UT accounting Ph.D. students have an impressive record of success in earning both University and privatefellowships.

In the first year of course work, accounting doctoral students develop research tools essential to the advancement of accounting knowledge. There is a first year seminar in accounting research methodology and design, to prepare students to assist in research projects and generate their own research ideas. At the end of their first year, students complete a replication exercise as an introductory research effort. At the end of the second year, students undertake a more extensive research effort that often leads to a publishable research paper co-authored with a faculty member. Students in the second and third years of the program take required accounting research seminars, other required courses in statistics and economics and a series of elective courses and seminars tailored to the student's desired specialization.

The program also develops teaching skills, while balancing the total effort devoted to teaching and research. Unless waived due to previous teaching experience, students are required to teach once in the program concurrently with taking a teaching effectiveness seminar. In other terms, accounting Ph.D. students are generally supported through teaching or research assistantships. See the Department of Accounting Ph.D. website for further details.

Students take a comprehensive written examination once they complete the coursework phase of the program. The exam consists of a series of questions on accounting scholarship. Upon passing the comprehensive examination, students enter the dissertation phase of the program, which culminates in a publishable, original contribution to accounting knowledge. The final step before graduation is a formal defense of the dissertation. Most students finish the program in four or five years after admission.

The Department of Accounting has an extensive web site on the Accounting Ph.D. program at the University of Texas at Austin, with detailed admissions and application information along with answers to frequently asked questions.

Areas of Specialization

Each student in consultation with the graduate adviser and individual faculty members selects a lead specialization and two supporting specializations. The lead specialization must fall within the accounting field, broadly defined. Typical lead specializations include auditing, financial reporting, managerial accounting and taxation. The two supporting specializations can be outside accounting, depending on the area and specific research questions. These specializations include appropriate empirical, experimental and analytical research methodologies. Faculty from economics, finance, management, computer science, mathematics, psychology, government, the Law School and the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs often participate in students' programs.
