Finance

Overview

The doctoral program in finance prepares students for a career in academics focused on research and teaching. Students are exposed to and are expected to become familiar with the current thinking in the financial economics literature. Through their coursework, students will develop strong analytical and empirical skills that will enable them to conduct research.

Students are provided a comprehensive background in the theoretical underpinnings of modern valuation theory. Statistical techniques and empirical methodologies are an integral part of the student's coursework and supplement the repertoire of skills the student develops. Students are exposed to ongoing research through an active Seminar Workshop Series that brings prominent scholars from other universities to campus almost every week.

Each student's program is individually tailored to the student's needs in coordination with the Ph.D. Admission & Monitoring Committee, to help them develop a comprehensive program that will prepare the student for the dissertation stage, subsequent research and a teaching career. Ph.D students are encouraged to engage in original, publishable research prior to the dissertation stage, this is often done in collaboration with a faculty member or another student. The doctoral program provides an opportunity for specialized study in several finance areas. The program usually requires three to four years to complete.

The program is also designed to develop the student's teaching skills. During the first year of the program, the student gains teaching experience through employment as a teaching and research assistant. After a year or two the student takes a course on teaching excellence and then teaches one or two summer session courses. The combination of apprenticeship training through the teaching assistantships, formal pedagogy and actual instructor experience allows Ph.D. students to develop their pedagogical skills along with their research skills.
