Libraries

The University of Texas at Austin has the fifth-largest academic library system in the United States. In Anthony Hobson's Great Libraries, it is cited as one of the 32 great libraries of the world and one of only five in the United States.

Nineteen different libraries across campus are home to over 6.6 million volumes and more than 4.7 million microforms. Conveniently, the Perry Castaneda Library - the graduate library on campus is located directly across the street from the McCombs School of Business.

Special collections include the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, home to the first book printed in the English language, the world's first photograph, major holdings in the 19th and 20th century literature and one of only five complete copies of thee Gutenberg Bible in the United States; the Benson Latin American Collection, an international resource for Latin American studies; the Barker Texas History Center, the most comprehensive collection of Texas materials in existence; the Tarlton Law Library, the fifth largest academic law library considered the finest legal research center in the Southwest; and the Engineering library, a repository for U.S. patents. Finally, the Lyndon Banes Johnson Presidential Library contains 35 million historical documents used primarily by scholars.
