  2009 BHP Outstanding Student & R. Conrad Doenges Award Winners

About the Award
These awards are presented to the five graduating Business Honors students, who in the judgment of their peers, the Honors Program faculty and the Honors Program Faculty Committee, have distinguished themselves in academics and leadership.
Nominee's provide evidence of excellence in:
  1. Non-academic contributions to UT, the CBA and/or the BHP
  2. Distinction among his/her peers in the Honors Program
  3. Academic excellence.

The five winners will receive a plaque and will be named on the master plaque hanging in the BHP office. From among the five winners of this award a recipient will be selected to receive the:

R. Conrad Doenges Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership in the Business Honors Program. The Award, named after Dr. Doenges, the previous Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs, consists of a plaque and a thousand dollar honorarium.

  2008 Texas Parent's Association Outstanding Student  Todd Bondy

Todd Bondy, business honors and finance senior, has been named one of  the Texas Parents’ Association Outstanding Student Award winner for 2008. The award was established in 1951 to recognize student leadership on campus and is given to only two students each year (one male, one female).
Among the finalists was Julia Kuo, another talented BHP Student.

 
  2008 Goldman Sachs Global Leader  Rebecca Counts

Second year business honors and plan II major Rebecca Counts has been recently named one of sixteen Goldman Sachs Global Leaders. This Award is given to the top sixteen candidates nation wide who demonstrate exceptional qualities in academic achievement, leadership abilities, potential for growth, communication skills, personal qualities and ethical character. Eight of the US Global Leaders will be selected to attend a week-long leadership session in New York over the summer.

Counts is also a member of the Texas Mock Trial that placed 1st at the National Tournament in Memphis, TN (2008) and 1st at the Dallas Regional Tournament (2007). She currently interns at Texas Senator Eliot Shapleigh (D-El Paso)'s Capitol office, the Lozano Long Institute for Latin American Studies at The University of Texas at Austin and Eastside Community Connection, a local non-profit.

 
  Named 2007 Draddy Trophy National  Top Scholar-Athlete  Dallas Griffin

On Tuesday December 4, 2007, Dallas Griffin  was awarded the 2007 Draddy Trophy presented by the National Football Foundation at its Hall of Fame induction banquet at the Waldorf-Astoria in midtown Manhattan. The award honors the nations' top scholar-athlete in college recognizing an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership. As the Draddy recipient Dallas will receive a $25,000 scholarship, the Draddy trophy, and national recognition.

Griffin has been a three-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection and graduated this spring with a double major in business honors and finance. He is currently a student in the McCombs MBA program.

  2007 Junior President’s Leadership Award   Katie Brehm

The Texas Exes President's Leadership Award highlights individual students nominated for consistently going above and beyond the call of duty, representing character and integrity in everything they do, and modeling outstanding leadership qualities by improving the quality of life of their peers and/or improving the University itself. Leadership hinges on values, relationships and a strong conviction in the future. Recipients are expected to emerge as future leaders for this university. The award is given to a freshman, sophomore, two Juniors and two seniors. Katie Brehm is one of the two Junior award recipient for the this years' 2007-2008 Presidential Leadership Award. Katie Brehm is a BHP and Marketing major and minoring in MIS and French, with a Bridging Discipline Program Certificate in Ethics and Leadership. She has also been a member of Texas Spirits, Business Council, Economics Research, Camp Texas, HBA and a BHP Super Peer Advisor, the managing advisor for BHP Peer Advisors.

  2007 Texas Parent's Association Outstanding Student  Dustin Deas

Dustin Deas, business honors and finance senior, received the Texas Parents’ Association Outstanding Student Award at a ceremony held Oct. 26, 2007. The award was established in 1951 to recognize student leadership on campus and is given to only two students each year (one male, one female). Deas has been involved in the Longhorn Band, Tejas Club, Texas Cowboys and the President’s Council.

  Glamour Top 10 College Women of 2006  Christine Nguyen
Christine Nguyen by age 22 has founded the Southeast Asian Children’s Coalition, a nonprofit organization that offers elementary school scholarships, vocational training and English lessons to sex-trafficking survivors. She spent the Summer of 05 studying government, working with Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and researching sex-trafficking along the Mexican border. Christines' dream job is to work as the United Nations Secretary-general.

  Fullbright  Scholar 2006  Sweta Vohra
  With a vision, a camera, and a Fulbright award, Sweta Vohra plans to change India one woman at a time.
Congress established the Fulbright Program, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, in 1946. Sweta explained that the awards “promote a mutual understanding of cultures and encourage independent research and projects in foreign countries.” As the largest U.S. international exchange program, Fulbright operates in more than 140 countries and has awarded scholarships to more than 42,000 U.S. students over the lifetime of the program. To apply for the student Fulbright scholar award, a candidate must submit a two-page proposal, three letters of recommendation, a curriculum vita, and reasons for wanting to do the project. Sweta received the award in June 2005, only a month after graduating with a degree in business honors from McCombs and radio-television- film from the College of Communication.
 
  Truman Scholar 2005  Lauren Gilstrap
  The Harry S. Truman Scholarship, one of the nation’s most prestigious graduate awards, is awarded annually to college juniors deemed to possess extraordinary leadership potential and interest in a public service career such as government, nonprofit, education, or a related field. Thousands apply every year, but only a fortunate few are recognized with the coveted $30,000 award that will support the recipients’ graduate studies. Lauren is now studying medicine at Harvard Medical School.    
  R.C. Doenges Scholar 2006 Shauna Ray
  The R.C. Doenges Award for Academic Excellence and Leadership in the McCombs School of Business Honors Program. Established in 1990, the RC Doenges Award is presented annually to the graduating Honors student, who in the judgment of his or her peers, the BHP faculty, and a faculty committee, is judged most deserving. The award, named after the late Associate Dean for Undergraduate Affairs, Dr. R.C. Doenges, consists of a plaque, a five hundred-dollar honorarium, and a set of books selected by the Doenges Family.     
  Texas Exes Outstanding Male Student 2005 Omar Ochoa
  This prestigious student award, established by the Friar Society in partnership with the Association, recognizes an individual at the junior level or above who has distinguished academic credentials, has made significant contribution to the University through campus-wide activities and evidences the personal attributes of character and integrity that have earned the respect and admiration of his or her peers.    
  2005 Texas Parent's Association Outstanding Student Marialena Rivera
  This award has been a tradition of the Texas Parents, the parents’ association of The University of Texas at Austin, since 1951. It is typically given to students who symbolize the hundreds of outstanding student leaders on the UT campus. This year, five out of the six finalists were BHP students: Omar Ochoa (the other award recipient), Adam Blum, Austin McNamee, and Sheena Paul.   
  Texas Exes Presidential Leadership Award 2006-2007 Sarina Hickey
  The Texas Exes President's Leadership Award highlights individual students nominated for consistently going above and beyond the call of duty, representing character and integrity in everything they do, and modeling outstanding leadership qualities by improving the quality of life of their peers and/or improving the University itself. Leadership hinges on values, relationships and a strong conviction in the future. Recipients are expected to emerge as future leaders for this university. Although two seniors receive this coveted distinction, only one receives a Life Membership in the Texas Exes. This 2007 prestigious award goes to Sarina Hickey, our own BHP student whose other majors include, Finance, and Spanish.
