BHP Frequently Asked Questions
My daughter is intending to be the leader of the free world. What student government opportunities are there and when should she get involved?
UT is full of amazing opportunities to get involved, gain leadership experience, and contribute to communities outside of our campus. I believe a student should start getting involved during their freshman year. From my experience, I would suggest beginning involvement with no more than two organizations. Your daughter should find two organizations that she can be extremely dedicated to and then make adjustments to that number as she gets adjusted and gains experience.
The two governing student groups at UT are Student Government and the Senate of College Councils. Student Government deals with all issues that relate to student life at the University. There are many opportunities for individuals to become involved with committees and spring elections. To find out more info on Student Government, go to this link: http://www.utexas.edu/studentgov/. I suggest that your daughter email the the President or the Vice-President directly from the website to get information on the current opportunities that are available.
The other governing body at UT is the Senate of College Councils. Senate focuses specifically upon the academic issues at the University. This group is made up of selected members from each of the college councils across campus. To get involved with Senate of College Councils, I would first apply to the Business Council. The Business Council website is www.texasbusinesscouncil.com. Look at that site for more info on application dates and deadlines.
In addition to Student Government and Senate of College Councils, there are many more opportunities for involvement at UT. The business school lists its organizations and fraternities at http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/udean/resources/studentorgs/list.asp. Have your daughter look through the list and select a group based upon her particular interests and goals. Be sure that she doesn't join a group that doesn't interest her because the point of joining an organizations is to become an active and contributing member. Finally, UT has over 700 other organizations listed at http://utdirect.utexas.edu/dsorg. You can search that website by genre of organization or alphabetically. Good luck hunting.
I receive more mail from honors societies than Publisher’s Clearing House. Which are the best honors societies to join?
If your mailbox is full of honor society paraphernalia, it is best to evaluate what each honor society has to offer. Some simply offer their name for use on a resume, others offer membership to student chapters on campus. All of them charge a nice fee. Don't waste your money and join everything that comes in the mail. Recruiters will ultimately see your GPA on your resume and know that you're an "honor worthy" student. I would suggest joining one or two, but don't waste money on more than that. In many students' experience, honors societies that had student chapters on campus offered the most for their money. To find out if there a chapter of a specific honor society at UT, go to this link: http://utdirect.utexas.edu/dsorg/.
