FrontPage Web sites

Accessing Web sites from Outside the Business School

You must specify the domain name 'McCombs' when trying to connect to your site from home or any location outside the School.  Be careful to only use a backslash '\' and not a forward slash '/'.

Here is an example screen shot:

There's a pesky FrontPage authentication bug for connecting to nested webs.  Follow this work-around the first time you connect to the site.

For Windows 2000:

  • Go to the desktop.
  • Launch My Network Places.
  • Launch Add Network Place.
  • Type in the full URL in the location text box.
  • Once this is established, you should be able to open the site back in FrontPage.

For Windows XP:

  • Launch My Network Places (from the desktop or through the Start menu).
  • Click "Add a Network Place" in the left frame.
  • The "Add Network Place" Wizard starts.
  • Choose "Select Another Network Location".
  • Type in the full URL of the site, including http:// at the beginning.
  • If prompted for a password, be sure to type in 'McCombs\' before your user name (see screenshot above).
  • Select "Finish"; your Network Place has been added.

The Web server will attempt to load one of six possible files as a homepage for your site.  The following file names are all valid "homepage" documents and the server will attempt to load them in the order given:

  1. index.htm
  2. default.htm
  3. index.html
  4. default.html
  5. index.asp
  6. default.asp

For example, if you create a file named "default.htm" to use as your homepage, it will load instead of "index.asp".  These sites are pre-configured with either "index.asp" or "index.htm" as the default homepage file.  To avoid confusion, it is recommended that you delete any pages that you are not using.

It is sometimes helpful to open the live web server site directly in FrontPage if you are having problems or if you are not certain that a particular document was published.  Use the 'File --> Open Web...' menu option for this.  Be sure to specify the full URL of your site as you would when publishing to it.

Here is an example screenshot:

There are a few authentication bugs in the FrontPage product that can cause some confusion.

  • Occasionally you may be prompted for your username and password in the middle of a publishing session.  Leave the username and password fields blank and simply select the OK button and publishing should continue.

Currently, all of the BBA Web sites have a disk space (or quota) limit of 25 megabytes.  If you are receiving an "insufficient disk space" message, please delete some files to make room.  You can also save most .GIF or.BMP files as .JPG files to save space.

FrontPage allows you to import an Access (.mdb) file into your website.  Read the instructions here.

Some people want to write the HTML by hand, or use other web editors (like Dreamweaver) to create and edit the content on their site.  This is perfectly fine, but you must use FrontPage to upload the content to the web server.  Here's how:

  • Open the live site in FrontPage using the Open Web selection under the File menu.
  • Import your files from your computer to the web server using the Import function under the File menu.
