The UT CIBER

The University of Texas at Austin's Center for International Business and Education Research (CIBER) has contributed to the McCombs School’s internationalization efforts in many ways. Its contributions have been made possible with the strong support the Center has received from Deans Robert E. Witt, Robert G. May, and George W. Gau. A major effort undertaken by CIBER to establish an infrastructure for the internationalization efforts has been the creation of the McCombs Global Network, a set of over 30 of the world’s top business schools located throughout Europe, Latin America, and Asia, with which the McCombs School has developed cooperative relations in various international ventures designed to accomplish CIBER’s goals. The most common form of collaboration is student exchange. Other types of collaboration include the establishment of double degree MBA programs, jointly offered Executive MBA programs, course offerings in overseas locations, PhD program cooperation and faculty exchange. For example, the Network has provided opportunities for more than 50 UT business faculty to obtain international teaching experience, which has also resulted in an increase in faculty international research productivity. Lastly, CIBER has also supported the incorporation of languages and area studies into business education, developed exchange programs for McCombs students, funded international study scholarships, and designed international courses, study tours and seminars.

As ‘National Resource Centers’, CIBERs conduct outreach programs to businesses and academic institutions throughout the country. The UT CIBER has worked with other educational institutions and business associations to enhance the international expertise of the region’s businesses.

The UT CIBER’s academic outreach programs take many forms, including sponsoring conferences for regional K-12 schools on international education, supporting programs that facilitate the internationalization of faculty in area educational institutions and disseminating innovative curricula and teaching tools to schools across the nation.

The UT CIBER’s principal legacy may be its work to foster internationalization within the school. As a result of its efforts, more internationally-oriented classes are being offered, faculty research has a more global dimension, and more UT business students are having significant international experiences. The Center’s efforts have helped to “bring the business school to the world, and the world to the business school.” As business has become global, so has business education, and CIBER has been a key player in the internationalization effort at the McCombs School of Business.

History

The University of Texas at Austin's Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) was established in 1990 with a grant from the United States Department of Education. Originally a group of 25, the CIBER network now comprises 31 business schools.  The CIBER grants run for 4-year periods, following which the individual schools must compete again for subsequent 4-year periods. UT’s CIBER has successfully competed for these grants in 1990, 1993, 1996, 1999, 2002 and 2006.

Mission

The mission of CIBER is the enhancement of U.S. global competitiveness. The three main goals of CIBER – relating directly to its mission – are:

  1. the internationalization of U.S. business education;
  2. integration of international non-business disciplines (e.g., language) into business education; and
  3. development of a partnership with the regional international business community to contribute to each other’s internationalization efforts.

Office Directions

The CIBER office is located on the third floor in the Graduate School of Business, room # GSB 3.126. GSB is located at the northwest corner of 21st and Speedway (see bottom right corner of the map below). Please note that the GSB is located within the McCombs School of Business.

Enter the building on the 21st St. side. As you enter the row of glass doors, you will see an escalator. Take it up to the 3rd floor. Go around the AIM stock exchange center to the left. Rm. 3.126 is the only door to the left.
