Doctoral Internationalization Consortium in Marketing

Date: Wednesday, July 22nd to Saturday, July 25th, 2009
Location: The University of Texas at Austin, McCombs School of Business

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Consortium

The Doctoral Internationalization Consortium in Marketing will provide doctoral students in all functional areas of business an international perspective regarding the major issues and research questions that are related to their disciplines. The consortium will bring doctoral students together with prominent faculty whose traditional areas of research have not been solely in marketing, but who have also internationalized their work. Students will attend talks conducted by faculty members and will participate in group discussion sessions developing international research agendas.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Format

There will be three types of sessions at the Consortium:

1. Faculty Presentations: Each faculty member will be asked to present a one hour and fifteen minute talk. Suggested topics include: (a) Why it is important to adopt an international perspective to conduct research within their area of the discipline, (b) The factors that led them to adopt a more international or global perspective, (c) Interesting international research projects that are being pursued in their specific area, and/or (d) a specific research project in which they are involved.

2. Student Breakout Sessions: Students will be divided into discussion groups according to areas of interest. Each group will be given the task of developing a broad international research agenda for their particular area of study. The goal is to develop a list of research questions in each of the major research areas which could be addressed by Marketing scholars. In other words, students will be asked to think about specific research areas that could advance the field if an international orientation was adopted. Faculty members will be asked to sit in and provide guidance to the discussion groups in an area of their expertise.

3. Student Presentations: At the end of the Consortium, each interest group will present its research agenda to the entire group. The goal is to provide general discussion of these issues and to develop a broad list of internationally-oriented research questions. The end product will be a formal list of research questions which can be distributed to all participants and sponsoring institutions.

The participants

About twenty-five students from quality institutions will be selected to participate in the Consortium. Those selected will be outstanding students who have not concentrated on the international dimensions of Marketing. To qualify, students should be at an intermediate stage of their doctoral program, (i.e., beyond the first year, but not yet at the dissertation stage). Students will be selected on the basis of two major criteria: (1) academic qualifications and recommendations, and (2) major area of interest within the discipline. Hotel and most meal costs are covered by Texas; students or their home universities will pay for transportation expenses.
