In this 5-part program, Philip Bass, Transaction Advisory Services America's Markets Leader, interviews Jayesh Desai, the Transactions Advisory Services leader at Ernst & Young Private Limited."  Ernst & Young has also archived Doing Transactions in China, Latin America and Russia. FIRS - Faculty International Research Support Budget: $40,000

OBJECTIVE:  To support and promote McCombs faculty interest in researching and publishing on international topics in the core business disciplines, by reducing financial barriers.

The FIRS program provides research grants to full-time faculty to defray some of the incremental costs of research on international topics.

  • Must target top-tier research journals
  • Two submissions per year:  deadline June 15 for Fall and November 15 for Spring
(50% of budget available per submission period)
  • Maximum $10,000 per project  possible
  • Proposals reviewed by committee convened for the purpose
  • Excluded costs:  travel (see separate FITS program); faculty salary; equipment.
For further information:  see the FIRS description and application
(Word) or contact David Platt, CIBER Director, at (512) 471-3518 or david.platt@mccombs.utexas.edu.

FITS- Faculty International Travel Support Budget: $20,000

OBJECTIVE:  To provide additional opportunities for McCombs faculty internationalization by defraying some of the costs of international travel (or of domestic travel related to international research projects).

Financial support for faculty travel will be provided under this program according to the following conditions and priorities:
  • $1,500 maximum per trip, with a maximum of $1,500 per faculty member in one academic year (may be multiple trips).
  • CIBER funds matched 1-for-1 by University Travel Grant (limit $1,200) and/or departmental or other source.
  • Funds may be used for any UT-reimbursable travel expense and also for conference registration.
  • Two submissions per year:  deadline June 15 for Fall and November 15 for Spring
(50% of budget available per submission period)
  • Priority will be given to funding requests in the following order:
    • Travel (international or domestic) for carrying out research funded by a FIRS grant.
    • Travel (domestic only*) to an academic conference to present research funded by a FIRS grant .
    • Travel to a McCombs international partner school for purposes of exploring research collaborations.
    • Travel (domestic only*) to an academic conference to present other research on an international topic.
    • Travel (domestic only*) to an academic conference sponsored by a research journal having a focus on international topics.
    • Other international travel, or domestic travel related to an international project, requested or approved by the McCombs School and consistent with federal grant requirements.
*Note: CIBER's funds come from a U.S. Department of Education grant.  Federal grant restrictions prohibit use of these funds for travel whose sole purpose is attending an international conference (even when presenting).  Travel to conferences is permissible when combined with other research activities, research-related meetings with partner universities or other similar activities.

For further information:  see the FITS description and application (Word) or contact Deirdre Mendez, CIBER Assistant Director, at (512) 471-8031 or deirdre.mendez@mccombs.utexas.edu.

CIBER Language Tutoring Program Budget: $2,000

OBJECTIVE:  To enhance the international environment of the McCombs School by supporting faculty members who wish to enhance their foreign language skills.

CIBER coordinates a structured foreign language tutoring program for MBA students, providing a semester-long tutoring model and serving as a clearinghouse to match interested students with native speakers who are interested in providing guided conversation in their language.  Faculty members are welcome to take advantage of this program, and CIBER will pay the associated cost of tutoring.  Applications are accepted at the beginning of each semester.

For further information:  see the online CIBER Language Tutoring program information page or contact Orlando Kelm, Associate Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and CIBER Associate Director for Language Programs, at (512) 232-4534 or orlando.kelm@mccombs.utexas.edu.

New Tenured Faculty International Research Support Budget: approx. $18,000

Objective:  To support new tenured faculty members (whether newly tenured at McCombs or newly hired by McCombs into a tenured position) in their exploration of international topics and connections, to introduce them to CIBER, and, where possible, to introduce them to the McCombs International Partner Network.

During the first twelve months that a faculty member is at McCombs after receiving tenure or being hired into a tenured position, CIBER will pay travel costs for one international research trip, up to $3,000.  It is anticipated that this trip would be for either research collaboration or making a conference presentation, though other purposes may be approved on a case-by-case basis.  Only expenses considered reimbursable by UT can be funded.  It is hoped that the faculty member will also briefly visit with research faculty at a nearby partner school, where feasible, and CIBER will facilitate this interaction. (Cannot be awarded concurrent with a FIRS/FITS grant.)

For further information:  contact David Platt, CIBER Director, at (512) 471-3518 or david.platt@mccombs.utexas.edu.

CIBER Summer Programs (Faculty Paid Participation) Budget: $70,000

Objective:  To provide McCombs faculty with a stimulating teaching opportunity abroad while supporting CIBER’s summer programs for BBA and MPA students.

CIBER administers a variety of summer programs for McCombs students, based at our international partner schools abroad.  Faculty from both McCombs and the partner school teach in these programs and we welcome opportunities to talk to faculty who are interested in the programs that we presently offer or in proposing something new.  These programs offer the possibility of:

  • Classes of 20-30 students.
  • Teaching (off-load) in a fairly compressed time frame, often in a course split between two faculty members.
  • Classes well spaced to allow time for personal development.
  • Contact with faculty members from partner schools.
  • Sometimes teaching specialized courses not available at McCombs.
For information on existing programs:  contact Trisha Maberly, CIBER Special Programs Coordinator, at (512) 471-1625 or trisha.maberly@mccombs.utexas.edu.
For new program proposals:  contact David Platt, CIBER Director, at (512) 471-3518 or david.platt@mccombs.utexas.edu.

CIBER Doctoral Internationalization Consortium Conference Budget: $5,000

Objective:  To provide select McCombs doctoral students (and faculty members with international interests) exposure to international research questions that are well established in the core academic disciplines.

McCombs CIBER is part of a consortium of research-oriented CIBERs (including Duke, Wharton, UCLA, Michigan, Washington, and Purdue) that offers a series of Doctoral Internationalization Conferences.  Each conference addresses international research questions in one of the core business disciplines.  McCombs CIBER and the McCombs Marketing Department host the Marketing conference every 2-3 years (most recently in May 2006).  CIBER also pays travel expenses for one or two McCombs doctoral students to attend the conferences in other disciplines that are hosted by other consortium members.  When we receive notice of an upcoming conference, we will contact the doctoral coordinator for the relevant department.
We also pay travel expenses for McCombs faculty invited to present at these consortia and, if funds permit, would also pay for other tenure-track faculty members who wish to explore international aspects of their discipline, to attend as well (subject to agreement by the hosting school).

For further information, contact Deirdre Mendez, CIBER Assistant Director, at (512) 471-8031 or deirdre.mendez@mccombs.utexas.edu.

Doctoral International Research Support Program Budget: $5,000

Objective:  To reduce financial barriers faced by doctoral students whose doctoral research includes a substantial international component.

Similar to the FIRS and FITS programs for faculty members, this program provides support to doctoral students who are engaged in international research.  Funding under this program is limited to $1,000 per student and only students admitted to candidacy are eligible.  Those engaged in more substantial projects may consider accessing FIRS funds by co-authoring with a McCombs faculty member.

For further information:  contact David Platt, CIBER Director, at (512) 471-3518 or david.platt@mccombs.utexas.edu.
