makers leading and higher-education experts. A prestigious
national event, the forum was hosted in its first two years by
UNC Chapel Hill, Duke University and the North Carolina

NFTP2005
This year, the conference will focus on a timely theme with
profound significance for the national economy and public
safety: Homeland Security and Southern Border Trade:
Implications for Public Policy and Business Strategy. Southern
border policy decisions affect each of the fifty states. Border
trade is critical to the national economy, and policy developed
to address illegal immigration holds significant economic,
political, and social implications for every region of the U.S.
The event will convene academics conducting research on homeland
security and border policy, federal and state trade officials,
and business leaders. Panelists and participants will discuss
challenges created by federal policy for state-level policy
makers and private sector companies developing corporate
strategy. They will engage in dialogue and problem-solving
sessions via presentations, question/answer sessions, roundtable
discussions, and social interaction.
Participants may expect to:
• Interact with top private-sector business strategists, expert
analysts of homeland security and border issues, and state and
federal policy makers
• Gain business intelligence on future directions in state and
federal homeland security and border policy
• Participate in scenario planning based on current and future
policy decisions
• Learn what state governments are doing in light of federal
policy to support business and international trade
• Discuss challenges for businesses defining corporate strategy
in a complex and evolving political climate
NFTP2005 is an invitation-only event, and participants will
interact with panelists via question/answer sessions,
roundtables and social events. Conference proceedings will be
videotaped so that they may be shared with the broadest possible
audience.
The conference will take place at Austin’s historic Stephen F.
Austin Intercontinental Hotel in the city’s vibrant downtown
area. Participants will attend meetings within walking distance
of Austin’s warehouse district and famed music scene.
