Information on Housing in Austin

While single and married student housing is available through the University Apartments, many students prefer to live off-campus. Austin has a wide selection of duplexes, complexes and houses.

Finding a new home

We understand that finding housing can be one of the most stressful parts of returning to school. We hope that this information this page provides will assist you in finding a place that fits your needs and your budget.

As a rough estimate, the most popular graduate student neighborhoods are Hyde Park (older rustic houses and apartments close to campus), Far West (apartments further from campus and serviced by the UT Shuttle System, the Enfield/Tarrytown/Lake Austin area (older houses, duplexes and apartment building along 15th street and serviced by the UT Shuttle System), South Congress/Riverside (new apartments services by the UT Shuttle System). West Campus is closest, but is highly populated by undergraduates.

Many of the local apartment complexes will 'pre-lease' (sign your lease now, move in August), and we recommend that you locate housing ASAP to get the better housing locations. Rental prices range from $400-1,200 depending on whether you want to live alone or with roommates, how close you want to be to campus, and how nice of a neighborhood or apartment complex you desire.

Setting up Utilities

Phone
AT&T (SBC Global): 800-464-7928
When you call, be prepared to select a long distance provider. If you are new to AT&T be prepared for a 12-month probationary period during which your long distance service will be cut off if your monthly usage exceeds $200. They will not reconnect you until you make a payment, so it's a good idea to over pay your first bill by $50 if you expect to use a lot of long-distance service.

Cable Television
Time Warner Cable
: 800-418-8848
It is a good idea to call Time Warner as soon as you sign your lease. They can get backed-up by as much as two weeks during the August, when the majority of UT students are returning to Austin. Time Warner also offer Road Runner high speed online access, a cable based Internet Service. Many MBA student find this service very convenient.
