Get Started
If you have been tasked with creating a new (or reviving an old) publication for a department at the McCombs School of Business, follow these steps to get started:
1. Glance at the index of School publications
to see if yours is similar to any existing or recent publications.
2. Read through the services section below. What level of service will you need - consulting, writing, or full project management?
3. Schedule a meeting with
Cory Leahy, who is in charge of School publications. (If
Cory is unavailable, contact
David
Wenger.) Please do this even if you do not need our assistance, since our office coordinates all School publications, and may have valuable information to help you out.
4. Start envisioning and planning your publication. If you will not be using Communications Services, you may want to see some of our
recommended resources for outside help.

BBA Brochure
UDOSS had never before published an admissions brochure for the undergraduate program, believing that the program didn't need one since demand outstrips the supply of program spots. But with the advent of the top-ten rule, suddenly there were high schools all across Texas that needed information about the BBA at UT-Austin. The Communications Department worked with UDOSS to refine text, supply photography, select and supervise a designer, and usher the piece through the printing process.

Dean May's Quarterly Reports:
2001
2000
1999
1998
On roughly a quarterly basis, Dean May communicates with key constituencies of the School-such as Advisory Council members, major donors, and corporate partners-through his Quarterly Report. Since the deadlines loom so frequently, he rarely has time to do more than sketch out his ideas for the report, which he then turns over to the communications department for expansion and refinement. We've been helping him write these reports, which have been very well received, since he started the practice in 1998.

MPA Alternate-entry brochure
With no one on staff designated in charge of publications, the MPA office called us to help publish the first brochure on the MPA Alternate Entry program. With little more than some website text and course information to go on, we wrote and structured the brochure content, selected and supervised a designer, and managed the printing process.

Capital Campaign
At the start of the University's 7-year "We're Texas" capital campaign, the School recognized a need for a set of high-quality pieces that elegantly and clearly stated the financial needs of the school. Working with Central Development, our Resource Development office, and Dean May, we edited and refined the brochure text, art-directed the photography, interviewed Business School alumni and donors for accompanying commentary, and managed the graphic design and printing processes. The result was one elegant copper-toned brochure and three coordinated 'deal sheets' that spelled out various levels of investment in the School.

Option II Article for Computer User magazine, March 2001
ComputerUser offered to publish a promotional spread on the School's Option II Executive MBA program. We worked with Mary Ann Willsey to write an article that would be of interest to one of the program's target audiences - technical professionals looking to make a move into business management.

MBA Speech
GBN Director Elissa Ellis did not want to give the same old speech to last year's graduating MBAs. We helped her prepare a satirical look at business jargon that won rave reviews, and not long afterwards she was promoted to
MBA Program Director. Pure coincidence?

Project Management
In project managing the School's core
publications and other special projects, we take publications
from concept to reality, overseeing budget, planning, writing,
editing, photography, design, and printing. Distribution is
generally left up to the departments receiving the
publication. Typically, the communications department project
manages the School's highest-priority publications along with
three or four special projects annually.

Use of Logo & School Name
Logo. The logo is a trademark
of the McCombs School of Business. Students, alumni and
friends of the School are encouraged to use it with our
permission, but the logo should never be changed, and should
always be used in one of its official formats. It's easy to
comply with the rules: Just get your logo copies from the logo
download site.
Read the directions, and don't change the graphics files.
School Name. Our official name is the Red
McCombs School of Business, but in general communications,
please refer to us either as the McCombs School of Business,
or, if the context allows it, simply the McCombs School. This
convention covers all School communications - also posters,
t-shirts, you name it - except for official letterhead, which
will use the complete name, the Red McCombs School of
Business.

Consideration of stories for publication
We are always open to story suggestions for
the School
magazine, for the MBA alumni newsletter business@texas,
or for our Website
and other publications. Don't be embarrassed about suggesting
your own company, research, or ideas for a story - we've
landed on some of our best articles this way. Just be aware
that the editors have to balance representation of many
different programs and topics, so we can not follow up on
every great tip.
