Before You Start

If you haven't already checked into using the Web Team services, be sure and do that. If you're sure you'll be editing or building the pages yourself, then:

  1. Download - Guide to Building a Web site (in PDF format)
A handy guide has been developed by the Web Team to assist those within the McCombs School in creating websites.

This guide moves step-by-step through the entire process and should be your read reviewed before beginning to build your site.

  2. Get an editor program
Unless you or your staff employee plans to do the entire HTML coding by hand, you should begin by purchasing a web page editor. Even if you plan to hand code, an editor can dramatically speed up the process of converting your present site to the new format.

    Recommended editor: FrontPage 2002

Do not use FrontPage 98, because it will overwrite ASP and other code used in the new format. If you use an editor other than FrontPage 2000, check how it handles ASP first.
  3.

  4. Get permissions for your website(s)
Generally a test site is created on http://w3test.mccombs.utexas.edu/. This is a virtual server set up for test purposes only, and it is where you should build and keep new pages. The "live" site is generally located on http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu. Permission to use the school of business servers is granted by the server administrators. Email the WebMasters
  5.

  6. Outline your site
As with any Website, it will be easier if you have laid out the exact wording, content and site architecture before you start building pages for your site.
