Web Content
Computer Services maintains a variety of web servers and related technologies to support the many missions of the business school. We provide web hosting services for classes, departments and student organizations as well as developing custom applications to bring administrative services online. Below you'll find information about the three primary providers of web and internet related services.
Web Site Design
The Web Team, located in GSB 3.129, is a group of Web producers who assist with the technical design, production, and maintenance of Web sites for departments at the School of Business. Presently the Team maintains over 30 sites at the School representing about 2000 web pages, while assisting with development and maintenance of many more.
The team is responsible for coding, graphic design, production, and technical quality control on a majority of the standardized sites at the School. Content remains under the direction of the department itself, which directs content changes and forwards them to the Team producer who maintains their site.
Team members work full-time on Web production, so they are familiar with all aspects of the production process, from design to coding, publishing, and placement with outside search engines. Team members serve as end-to-end project managers for the sites that they work with. This situation has many advantages, including:
- Reliance on full-time staff. Instead of relying on part-time student workers, you get service from full-time staff; if your assigned producer is out for any reason, another Team member covers your site.
- Customer service. Team members are charged with delivering excellent customer service to their client departments; they are held accountable for their service and evaluated on its quality.
- Single point of contact. With a Web Services producer handling the technical project management of your site, you do not need to contact multiple departments and technical staff at the School when you want to get something done on the Web, you just leave it up to your project manager.
Consulting with the Web Team, can help you get started with the templates or pursue other options, for instance non-standardized pages or pages built through an outside design agency.
Use the Web team's Guide to Building a Web site, which outlines in detail the steps necessary to create a site and provides a guide to working with the standard McCombs templates.
Web Server Access
The McCombs Webmasters are part of Computer Services Server Team and are responsible for the administration of the college web servers. They maintain a number of different servers which host the not only the McCombs home page and departmental sites, but also sites for student projects and application development.
Access to the web servers and the sites they host is managed by the Webmasters. Contact Gary Joslin with questions about the services and capabilities the Server Team can provide for your website.
Personal Websites
Personal websites are available to faculty upon request. To request a website, simply email the Webmasters. Personal websites for faculty members are created at http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/faculty/first.last. Computer Services cannot host personal domains (www.awesomeprof.com, for instance) on our servers.
MIST (McCombs Information Solutions Team)
The primary role of MIST is to design, develop and implement custom applications that meet the information management needs of McCombs faculty, staff and students. We work closely with our clients to create custom-tailored solutions to their information needs. We work with clients to help them prioritize their needs, identify business processes that can be made more efficient through automation and help translate complex policies and procedures into standard rules that an information system can apply.
