Frequently Asked Questions:
We created this list of questions from those we had, as well as others we have heard. If you have other questions, please feel free to email one of the officers.
What is it like to be a MBA student amongst all those guys?
Due to McCombs' informal, diverse atmosphere, being a woman here is great. Our guys are generally very accepting and open. We feel as though our voices and ideas are heard and respected by both students and faculty. There doesn't seem to be any difference in the receptivity due to differences in sex.
What if I don't have a quantitative background?
Two thirds of our students are in your shoes. As long as you are willing to work hard, which you probably are or you wouldn't be applying to business school, you should not be at a significant disadvantage. If you are very concerned about it though, taking a course in economics, calculus, accounting or finance at your local community college prior to enrollment might help to grease those wheels.
What is the recruitment atmosphere at McCombs?
We have a very healthy recruiting system here at the McCombs School. The Ford Career Center web page lists the companies that currently recruit on campus. We have a diverse spread of companies from technology start-ups to large industrials, from retail marketing to energy finance. Whatever your interest, there are companies here for you!
Is there a social life at the McCombs School for those of us not married?
Austin, Austin, Austin.
Austin's climate allows for a very active, outdoor culture. Whether it be Thursday night "Think and Drinks", UT football and tailgates, Cohort parties, Tour de Campus, volunteer opportunities through the Central Charity Challenge, Friday night "MOHHs" parties, 6th Street, intramural sports teams or something else, there is something for you!
If I'm married, are there other guys out there for my husband to hang out with?
The Student and Significant Other Network provides a means for the spouses and significant others of MBA students to socialize and be a part of the MBA experience.
What is the Cohort system and why is it good for me?
The Cohort system infuses a sense of a small intimate program with all the advantages of a large school. Through this program, you are able to develop close friendships with your cohort and also your team within your cohort. This atmosphere allows you test your developing skills and ideas in a safe and hospitable environment.
Is there a mentoring network for first years?
Absolutely! Every first year is assigned a second year mentor to help you navigate through classes, professors, studying habits, etc.
Your mentor is there for everyday questions, networking and support during your first year.
