Speaker Series
GWIB’s Speaker Series brings recruiting companies closer to McCombs students, allowing company executives to share their experiences on the front lines of current business challenges. Speaking engagements occur monthly, drawing speakers from companies particularly interested in recruiting women.
Professional Development
GWIB organizes events to help McCombs women students enhance their professional skills and explore career opportunities. Events include the “Up-Close Dinner Series”; networking events designed to expand members’ professional contacts; and special skill-focused meetings responding to specific areas of member need. Annual Events include:
Speed Networking and MBA Concentration Dinners- To begin each year, GWIB hosts a speed networking event which provides new first year students to meet the second year students and discuss their career aspirations and past experiences. This enables new students to immediately connect with other students who are interested in similar career paths. A few weeks later, second year students host dinners focusing on their chosen concentrations and allow students to learn more about courses, professors, and advice regarding their MBA concentrations.
Up-Close Dinner Series- GWIB hosts these casual dinners monthly with professional women and professors. These meetings allow students to learn more about their areas of interest in a more intimate setting.
GWIB is also consistently looking for new ways to help our members explore possible career paths and professional opportunities. Other unique events have included a networking event with women on the McCombs Advisory Council as well as company-sponsored events in conjunction with career fairs.
Please see the McCombs calendar for upcoming events or contact the GWIB Professional Development officers for more details
Events
GWIB organizes social events designed to foster relationships between first- and second-year McCombs women. Social events help our members get to know one another and foster social bonds. Annual events include:
Annual Boat Cruise—A cruise on Lake Austin to welcome incoming students and reconnect with friends.
Small Group Dinners—Dinners that pair first-year students with second-years in their concentrations.
Monthly Happy Hours—Explore the Austin outside of McCombs. Past events include First Thursdays and Martinis & Manicures.
Preview Weekend Event—A dinner for admitted women during Preview Weekend that allows incoming students to meet our members and find out what life is really like at McCombs.
Please check the McCombs calendar for upcoming events or contact the GWIB Events Officers for more details.
Women in Business Leadership Conference
The mission of the annual Women in Business Leadership Conference, organized and hosted by the women at the McCombs School of Business, is to cultivate and enrich MBA women's academic experience, enhance career networks for women, and celebrate the remarkable strengths women bring to corporate America. We bring together motivated MBA students, alumni, successful corporate businesswomen, and thriving entrepreneurs from all over the country to connect, discuss, and learn more about issues facing women.
The conference occurs each February and offers GWIB members the opportunity to build leadership experience planning and managing the event. Amanda Yates, Emily Dreyer, and Milagros Silva, each second-year MBA students, will lead the 2007 conference. The success of the event depends on the efforts of current students and sponsoring companies. Please contact the WBLC Chair for more information.
National Association of Women MBAs
The National Association of Women MBAs (NAWMBA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting women MBAs. Their membership is composed of women MBAs, and MBA-equivalent degrees, from across the U.S. Membership is open to both current graduate students and alumnae. Please see the NAWMBA website for details.
Forté Foundation
McCombs is a founding member of the Forté Foundation—a national non-profit organization designed to increase the number of women business owners and business leaders. We have joined other educational institutions, businesses, and non-profit groups to build awareness of business education among young women, to increase the number of women entering business, and to support the careers of women through business networks.
