After you receive your admission letter

Now that you have received the acceptance letter, the most important thing you need to do is to make sure you have received all the documents. You would at least receive the followings:

    • I-20 Form with the financial aids information
    • Immunization form
    • Admission Letter from UT Austin and/or from the Department /Program
    • The letter with the information on Financial Aids (If it's included in the previous letters, then this letter is not necessary)
    • Information Binder from the Department /Program

The next important thing is to apply for a Visa

    • We recommend that you apply for Visa as soon as you think you are ready. Closer to the starting of the academic sessions it becomes busy at the US consulates and you might not get a desired date for the Visa interview.

After you receive your visa, book your air travel tickets as soon as you can:

    • July, August is a busy season for tickets. We suggest you book your tickets in advance. This will save you last minute anxiety of unavailability of tickets. Some airlines allow concessions in both fares and baggage weight for students traveling on F-1 visa. It might be worth while checking with your airline if they give any such concessions.
    • Most airlines have baggage weight restrictions. The anxiety and thrill of coming to US often ends up in excess packing. Check with your airline for the baggage restrictions and concessions.
    • If you can not take non-stop flight to Austin, you may need to transfer the flight in some big city in US. Remember to leave enough transferring time, because normally big city’s airports are quite big. And sometime one city has more than one airport. So find the correct airport terminal information before you take the plan.
    • Most US airlines have membership. If you want to join one to get future discounts, remember to keep your air ticket.
