Meet the course instructor, who can help you with
any questions or provide additional information.
Kent joined the University of Texas faculty in January 1996 as
the Director of the Quality Management Consortium. This unique
graduate program, sponsored by the McCombs School of Business, the
College of Engineering, and the Graduate School of Information
focused on implementation of performance excellence in industry, and
was completed in 2003. Additionally, an undergraduate version was
launched as the Brass Ring program in 1998. This project oriented
program features applied research projects with area businesses and
organizations.
His performance excellence activities include Quality Management
Systems/ISO 9000, IBM Corporation; internationally registered Lead
Quality Assessor; instructor for IBM’s International Finance,
Planning, and Accounting School; guest lecturer at UT Austin College
of Engineering, Oregon State University, University of Texas-Permian
Basin, and University of Texas-El Paso. He has served on the
Advisory Board - Software Quality Institute; Austin Independent
School District Quality Council; Executive Committee of the Greater
Austin Quality Council; Co-Dean of the Austin Technology Council
University; and is currently on the Advisory Board of the UT Center
for Performance Excellence. Kent was a quality management systems
consultant from 1990-1994, and a speaker at COMMON national
conferences from 1994-1998.
Kent retired from the IBM Corporation in 2004, most recently as
program manager with IBM Learning Services directing professional
skill development. Joining the company in 1967, he held staff and
management positions in Industrial Engineering, Financial Planning,
Cost Engineering, and Strategic Planning; and Senior Staff positions
in Quality, Community Relations, Division Business Process
Improvement, and Corporate Reengineering.
Additional professional accomplishments include a broad range of
military staff and command assignments at every level from private
to colonel in both active and reserve components. Responsibilities
included senior command and staff positions, NATO engineer liaison,
and U.S. Army Engineer policy council.
Kent’s current academic and teaching emphasis focuses on leveraging
performance excellence principles for business success.
