CPT Skills Review
The Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) will test your skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. The following website demonstrates the basic skills on which you will be tested. It does not contain the exact questions from the test. For more information about the Computer Proficiency Test go to http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/udean/admissions/proficiencytest.asp.
Test Taking Tips & Tricks:
- Don't hit the Back button. On the CPT exam, you will see Back and Next buttons. Pressing the Back button will skip the question you are on and count it wrong. You can press Next - this will move you to the next question but repeat the skipped question later in the test.
- Only use the menus and icons, not keyboard shortcuts or right-click menus. Many parts of the test do not have keyboard shortcuts and right-click menus enabled, so you should learn the alternate way to complete these skills.
- Read the question carefully. Does it mention Format? There is an entire format menu - check it out! Does it tell you to insert something? Start with the Insert menu. The question will give you clues. Also, pay attention to the general skill listed in the upper right corner of the testing screen, that may also give you ideas.
- You can look through the menus, just don't click on a choice till you are certain. Can't remember if Printing is under File or Edit? You can look under both menus, but once you click Print, you're stuck with it.
About the Online Training Modules:
The online training modules allow you to see how to perform the skill and then allow you to practice. During the practices, the modules will automatically type any text for you. When you take the CPT, you will have to type the text yourself. Make sure you spell things right!
The online modules use Office 2003 whereas the test uses Office XP, so the programs may look slightly different when you take the test, but all functionality and program options are the same.
